I am so, so disappointed with this game it is unreal but i'm not going to go into that because people will get hostile.

I also don't understand how many critics have given this game such a good review, it just doesn't make sense to me
but hey it is their opinion I suppose!

However, one of the things that has caught my attention is the pathetic, mostly useless state of the United Nations.

In Civ IV, you could do so many things with the U.N., it felt like a vital privelidge to build it in your city.
It truly felt like the United Nations of the real world, nations voting, disagreeing, coming together to decide on matters.

Trade embargos, mandate for city ownership, single currency, open borders, the list goes on.

Now, with the new improved Civ V U.N, you can......er...... vote for diplomatic victory.

And, er, vote for diplomatic victory.

But at least it LOOKS good! Thats the important thing, at least in Firaxis' eyes.

:/

I haven't gotten that far yet, but really? No more one currency or nuclear proliferation votes?

That's sad to hear, I've never actually had the patience to go that far on the tree either... I once got to bombers and that's only cause I delayed killing the last city just to see planes LOL...

The old UN was really fun, especially nukes... You get that jaw drop to table look when they vote yes cause you KNOW something big is bout to happen hahahah...

Diplo victory is not really diplo victory... It's liberation victory...

Ah yes, I was meaning to bring up the same argument myself. I was looking forward to perhaps some increased trade mechanics and forcing AI civ's to make peace etc, but no such luck.

I haven't gotten as far as the UN but I did notice that it just let's you win a diplo victory. I have to agree that is pretty lame. In general, many of the complexities of the game from Civ IV have been simplified. I don't know if this was done to make it easier for players or to make it easier to program a decent AI. Frankly I miss the complex strategies you could develop in Civ IV. Tech research complexity is greatly reduced with a simplified tech tree and no tech trading. Spying is gone. So are religions. Wonders are also somewhat reduced in power with Pyramids being greatly diminished. I like how the increased importance of gold/commerce gives you greater flexibility that's a great improvement but you can't rush production, you have to buy the unit/building as a whole probably again I assume to make it easier to program an AI. I'll have to play some more to decide which I like more Civ IV or Civ V but so far I'm leaning towards Civ IV.

Civ IV battles are soooo boring tho, and lack of ZOC made defensive wars a nightmare... I HATED troop drop of doom you can't stop because they walk right by you... Made Calvary so deadly...

What they need to do is just update the Civ IV econ into the new Hex map, get the UN from IV, and plop it here too... Cause that made no sense to change that out... They should make pop / vote like it was too...
