It would be very good to see more indvidulised units for each civ, throught the ages. Not only UU's, but also standard units as well. Plus alot more for each age. A large part of the civ game is the units, and I have found that in civ 3 conquests the different units in the scenarios are one of their major attractions.

How this work:
Well some civs could have better infrantry than others, like in the Napoleonic conquest where Britain and France have their own infrantry. This could then be counter balanced by giving some civs better artillery, or cavalry or more unique UU's.
This could be done by having more ages...rather than the cureent industrial -> modern era transition there could be anotehr age added in between to represnt the world war 1/world war 2 peroid. That peroid could have lots of choices of tanks (light, medium, heavy could be 3) and so on.

I woudl really like to see Civ 4 have a great difference between all the civs, so that each time you start an epic game with a new civ it would be a new experiance.

(I'll elaborate on this more in another post, but I have to go out now...)

To expand on this, I would like to see units have plus and minus when going up against other types of units. Similar to what Age of Empires does.

For example, Knights recieving a bonus when attacking archers but don't recieve the bonus if attacking pikemen. Or the TWO infantry recieving a bonus when attacking an armored enemy and no bonus attacking a foot unit.

I have an idea. How about an expensive land unit that repulses cruise missles and nukes.

Speaking of cruise missiles......I would like them to be able to be loaded onto and fired from ships.

Yeh, that would definetally go inline with my thinking. Would also help equal the balance a bit..say the English had really good longbowmen which gave them an advantage, well these could be much easily destroyed by enemy knights than say infrantry.

But anyways....more of example of units:D

Planes would be an excellent one. There are many different kinds of planes and it would be great to see each civ having variety...planes could at air defence...planes good at long range bombing..planes for reconaisance....and so on. The USA could have F-15's like now, then the Russians MIG's, the British Spitfires...etc. For civs which never made it this far (like the Sumerians or the Hitties) the tech tree good be seperated into 2 different paths, enabling them to decide which planes to research and which to ignore. Then once they had gone for one route they might not be able to go down the other.

More resourced could be introduced as well. Conquests saw Ivory being used for Ancient Calvary via Statue Of Zeus, well in Civ 4 resources such as Elephants or camels could be introduced, leading to some civs being able to use war Elephants (rather than them just being a UU) and camel cavalry units.

I'm sure people have pleanty other ideas of what units could be introduced to:)

So....How does everyone else view this? What units would you liek to see? How could these units be included? etc.

I had suggested in another thread that all units have a random factor based into them. Here is the idea, in a nutshell, so to speak:

Each time a tech that allows new units is discovered, the discovering civ would get a random +/- to the unit. This would require that the current a/d/m values be multiplied by 10, but that shouldn't bother a computer any.

Thus, all civs start with warriors: In my model each civ would have a +/- 20% for each value. Thus, I might have warriors with an attack of 12 and defense of 8, another civ would have 10/10, a third civ might be somewhat unlucky and get an 8/8.

This would allow for a lot more flavor to the game and would not cripple anyone due to a bad roll (-20% is just not all that bad).

This would automatically give a randomness to discoveries and allow each civ its own unique identity. In case people think this is historically inaccurate, try comparing Italian WWII tanks to German ones!

In fact, one of the problems with the Pacific War campaign in C3C is that it assumes that the allies did not already have medium tanks. Shermans and Grants were already being used at the time of Pearl Harbor (by the British). These tanks were devastating when used against the Japanese (their tanks were not very good at all).

Yeh thats a pretty good idea :goodjob:

My main 'want' is for their to be more units in general, and more Unique Units per civ. Combining it with that idea could lead to a very intresting game which would be very different each time you play it with a different civ :)

For the more units bit, well more ages and more techs is the way for that.

You can get a lot of what you're saying in the DYP mod.

@rcoutme - that's great idea. It would certainly make the game more interesting.
