This is probably a pretty stupid question but after looking through the forum and at the xml files for a bit I can't figure it out. Anyway, what I want to know is is there a way to make a unit able to upgrade to later units without taking away the option of building that unit?

Don't like the fact that I'm forced to build more modern stuff after a while even though some of it isn't really better, depending on what you use them for, so I'm hoping I can do something about it.

As long as there is still something to upgrade to that isn't yet buildable you can build the unit. So, for example if a Warrio upgrades to an Axeman, Spearman and Swordsman you can build warriors until you discover Iron Working and can build Swordsmen.

So to allow upgrades while not making a unit obsolete all you need is an invisible tech that you can research that allows a unit to be built and then have that unit as one of the upgrade possibilities. To make a tech invisible just make it's grid position 0,0 and set its bDisabled to 1.

Yes, it's a hack, but it works :)

So for example you could make a Warrior upgradable to a Swordsman, a Spearman, and a Mech Infantry, so you would be able to build Warriors most of the game. (with the hack you do the same thing, just you actually put "Mech Infantry" off the grid by making their tech not researchable)
