Upgrading Units

Hi, I am fairly new to MP. Anyways, last night I tried to upgrade a unit inside a teammates territory and it would not let me.

It says I can only upgrade in friendly territory. Is a teammates territory not considered friendly?

Composite to Crossbow. I gifted unit and gave teammate money to upgrade. Realized he couldn't gift back, so i had to pay him GPT to support his new army.

Any workarounds to this?

afaik, you only upgrade your units in your own territory.
