This isn't a particularly earth shattering tip, but it's something I've started doing to help myself remember goals for city specialization - which seems to be a much bigger factor with IV.
What I do is start off with the auto-naming the computer generates when I settle a new city. Eventually, once I have a feel for what I would like this city to specialize in, I edit the city name such that it has a little suffix at the end. For example, so I don't have to go into the city manager each time to see if I had a barracks there, I put a at the end (i.e. Stuttgart). Or maybe I want Frankfurt to be a science powerhouse, to remind myself that's the goal I'll rename it Frankfurt.
Maybe someone else will find this usefull. I just like having a reminder of what my master plan is.
