I don't know what the official stance is but I think when bad luck happens it happens. I've seen some pretty awful examples in my time but it's the way the game is - the random number generator rules supreme
Policy Previous Demogames has always been we live with what we've got.
When we were faced with the Domino War in DG1 we did not undo the saves to ensure we didn't have the entire war against us.
When we lost PDX, we didn't go back a turn to make sure we didn't lose all the cultural developments in one of our most productive cities (We took it back immediatly though).
When Apolyton (talking about another site's DG) found themselves stranded in a Jungle starting location they didn't restart the game for more favorable conditions they decided to rise to the challenge.
Simply put, I'm against going back a few turns, and previous Demogames have as well.
Also, it's also traditional that you don't play beyond even outdated saves until the Demogame is finished.
Reloading from previous saves is simply not done. Falcon provides an excellent example from DG1. I'll provide another from DG2...
When the treacherous Indians launched a devestating surprise attack and captured 3 cities from us in one turn, we did not fold, but rather responded with conviction and a dedication that all but assured us of victory. It also launched one of the most enjoyable parts of the demogame - the Underground - which was responsible for some of the best role-playing IMHO to date.
I say No to restarting. We play the hand we are dealt and we improvise, adapt and overcome.
The only exception I could ever contemplate would be on a misclick / misfinger. This happens to also be the only exception allowed in the GOTM, and in every other group or competitive game I've been involved in. The really dangerous one is trying to use the "e" box at the right edge of the info box to build an embassy or to start espionage. If you're off by a few pixels, it gets treated as an "end of turn" and all remaining actions in the current turn are skipped.
When I play SG's, I'm extremely careful to know exactly what each keyboard shortcut will do, and to pause the mouse before releasing the button. I'm sure DP duties will be the same...
No to Time-Jumping. We have to think hard and discuss a lot to minimise the risk of bad things happening to us. And if those still happen, we must think harder and discuss a lot more to bend the misfortune to fortune.
In DG4 we were not doing very well before the first Babylonian war, but fought bravely and after the first Babylonian war we had the game in our hands.
I personally value a victory which was dragged from the gates of destruction much and much higher than a victory with the aid of a time-machine.
I agree. I can't believe this thread has been active so long. The Time Machine is cheating. Just because the game cheats, we should be above that. Besides with over 30 great people working together, there's no way we can't work our way out of a disasterous situation. But...
Mr. President please make sure your cat is locked outside the computer room, so it doesn't walk across the keyboard.
Yep, 16 No's now including myself and Cyc, and on Monarch, I doubt with all the players who play higher levels, that we couldn't salvage something form a couple of bad throws.
Does Mr. President have a cat? If so he (or she) should become our lucky mascot and should be locked in the room to guide our Imperial Nation's growth.
