Wasn't sure where to post this, but this seemed the best place. I'm not 100% sure this works--final testing should occur in the next couple of days, but early tests are encouraging.
The Goal: To use World Builder to modify games intended for mp (in this case, direct IP) play.
Here is what seems to be working:
1. Start a new single player game. The first civ should be set to whomever the host player wants to play.
2. For the other players, you can either set them, or leave them as random--see below for how to change them later.
3. Don't do anything, just go straight into WorldBuilder. Make the alterations you want there.
4. Save the file under a new name (say, example.civBeyondSwordWBSave).
5. Exit the game you were playing.
6. Start a new MP SCENARIO. Note, not a game, a scenario.
7. Select the file you saved in step 4.
That should do it. Now, if you want to change a specific civ or leader, insert the following between steps 5 and 6. This is required if, for example, you and a friend want to play a 15 civ game, where you pick your civs, but the other 13 are random (because in the single person game, FOURTEEN random civs will be included).
* Start a quick single player game--it doesn't matter the map size, etc. Just make sure the leaders you want in your real game are included.
* Go into WB on the first turn. At the bottom of the file, you will see the entries that define the teams and the civs. Copy and paste the relevent sections into the file you saved in step 4. The first section--which defines the teams--tells you what the starting techs are; the second section has the civ and leader specific information (as well as the level you are playing at).
So, the basic idea is:
* Create a single player file that matches as closely as possible the MP game you want.
* Use WB to update it however you want.
* Optionally, manually edit the WB Save file to further customize it.
* Start an MP SCENARIO, using the modified WBSave as the source.
I'll update with notes as I figure out if this actually works, and if not, if I can make it functional.
