v1.52: Sounds too soft to hear; music plays fine, but fuzzy

I've been having some intermittent audio troubles with Civ IV - the sounds are all too soft to hear, with the exception of the music which stays at its regular volume - albeit fuzzier, as though it had been downsampled.

I'll provide logs when I can, as well as any other requested details - the most relevant probably being the Dynex 5.1 Sound Card using the VIA Envy24 audio chipset.

Alright, it's not a one-time thing; it seems to be permanent. I've tried reinstalling Civ IV, but no dice - the sound problems seem to be stemming from something outside of the core game files. Oddly, I don't have this problem in any other game...

I've noticed a variance of the sound volume which depends on how far I have zoomed out.
