In BNW Venice is by far my favorite civ to play. It seems to be the only civ that i can play with and win on diety level but i think it's cause i'm horrible at managing multiple cities and with Venice i don't have to worry about that. My question is, what is the best way to play them when it comes to annexing city states? I usually don't annex more then 1 or 2 max city states to keep early trade routes going. Is going beyond 3 cities with Venice wise choice? I have moved on to Immortal level with couple games on Diety so far.

As Venice; I'd use GMOV to buy more than just 2 city states.

Exact number depends upon the types / natural wonders / etc.

You could also complete the commerce social policy track and purchase GMOVs with faith, and then use the GMOVs to purchase city states.

Problem i see is if you annex bunch of city states, usually they're far apart so your empire is all over the place and somewhat hard to defend.

I have only played venice once.. but I found the gold and the 60 points your given with a city-state was probably the better deal.. (I got at least 5-6 great merchants) as you know since you don't manage the cities "whatsoever" you can use the gold to build things ;) when you need it..

I haven't boughten a single state (almost bought a culture civ they had Krakatoa for 6+ science.. but I decided I needed the culture instead..)

All my cities came from warfare.. and the AI sucks at war.. :(

Venice is great! You get to take over City-States regardless of affinity (unlike Austria which demands friendliness) and just be an underdoge and take the game with amazing cash flow late-game.

Yeah, how does Venice defend a far-flung, noncontiguous empire that is spread all over the map? Any suggestions?

Umm.. up against other city-states.. buy them off? :mischief:

But as I said.. I don't really suggest you buy them.. seemed wasteful to me..

You don't have a far-flung empire. You only buy city states that are relatively close by because the main purpose of buying city states is that you can run food (and in the late game hammer) trade routes from them to Venice.

Purchasing CSs with Venice can take away votes from WC leaders so Venice could be useful this way. However, CSs can sometimes get large populations which can also cause unhappiness. The protectionism social policy in the commerce social policy tree can help reduce unhappiness as well as the monarchy social policy from tradition.

That's a strategy, not a rule, don't get it mixed up.

GMoVs can purchase any city states regardless of distance.

Against the dumb AI???
Take advantage of your UA by cash buying a military unit there if really needed.
But chances are you won't need to.
