I don't know about all of you folks, but I'm a long time civ player-- but I never really got into the modding and all of that. I just liked to play the game vanilla as that was usually good enough..

Civ 4, on the other hand, has left me utterly frustrated. The world builder can be summed up by the very idea that you can't even get to it without starting a single player game, and then overhauling and already existing map. Its unintuitive, clunky, and missing tons of options. The only way to do even the very simplest map making and modding that is the bread and butter of these kinds of games is with extensive programming.
I can't even chose to play the earth map with as many, or which, civilizations I want, I can't chose their colors, I can't change their starting locations... nothing. This game just feels extremely rushed and half finished.
I have come to expect this from many game publishers these days, but this one really suprised me. Don't you think adding a worldbuilder option on the main menu would have been pretty high on the priority chart?

I have finished two games on "Epic" length and this game has -tons- of potential and I have no doubt that in time it will become a true classic. Its just really disheartening to have the game released only to have it partially unfinished. I would have rather waited a few more months and built up the anticipation only to be let down and then have to wait.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. I think I will putting this one on the shelf for a few months, I'll check back when they've finished it.

I'm also a little disappointed by the World Builder, but it's not all bad. To unlock the rest of the features you have to activate the cheat code. (see Soren's sticky) You can also create scenarios in text mode by modifying a save in notepad. It's written in (almost) plain english. To change civ colors, or anything that would have been in the "rules" section of the Civ3 editor, you have to edit XML.
Everything that was promised can be done. It's just a steeper learning curve than before, and we're still learning how to do everything.
