Hey All,

I've only just purchased the Vanilla of Civ 5. I have never played any civ before and i find it very overwhelming

i started the tutorial of play as you go and it teaches you as you go although i found it doesn't teach you everything

Does anyone know of a good Tutorial for complete beginners that i can read through?

There's just solo much to learn on this..

For instance i started attacking a city state, was not told that i needed a melee to finish off the city

was there for about 10 mins trying to figure out why my elephants would not destroy the city

So anything that is good for a complete noob to learn from would be great

It could very easily have been a great buy on special. Does he really need to justify the purchase?

Do you have any friends that play? Hotseat with a friend is a fantastic way to learn, since they can give you advice and you can see them making decisions. If not, I would just recommend you play around on Settler, turn help all the way up, and see what happens. Civ is a lot like chess; it's easy to learn and nearly impossible to master. Good luck! Just have fun and prepare to lose a few games!

P.S. you should really consider buying Gods & Kings. It makes the game much more fun, and will allow you to play with more people, since almost no one plays vanilla.

Welcome to CivFanatics, Andy! Some of the above posts are...less than helpful, but there's some kernels of wisdom there. The Strategies and Tips sections of these forums are really helpful, especially the War Academy section. Some veteran civvers have posted some really great articles there. If you have a particular civilization you enjoy, the War Academy almost certainly will help you.

Another good resource is Mad Djinn's You Tube channel. He a veteran player that actually is helping to beta test the new expansion. He's got some great strategies to teach.

Speaking of expansions, most of us agree that the original Civ5 is a flawed game and most of those flaws were eliminated by the first expansion - Gods & Kings. I'd highly encourage you to purchase the expansion next time it goes on sale; it makes the game much more enjoyable.
