I had to bite the bullet and get me a new PC with Vista, and of course I installed Civ3 on it.
Now, when I mod a biq-file and save it in the C3CEditor the save doesn't show outside of the C3CEditor. I can't see it in Vista's equivalent of Explorer, it's not counted among the files in the Scenarios folder, and any previous link to it like 'recent documents' can't find it. But when I start the C3CEditor I can find it again, both with the 'recent' link and through "archive"->"open" where it shows among the other files. Now what the **** is this?!

Edit: It's the same problem with saves! Any save from games I play are invisible outside the game, but can be loaded in the game.

Try clicking on START, then right-clicking on the Conquests start file and then on properties(which should be at the bottom of the list). There should be a compatibility tab at the top of the window that pops up. Change the compatibilty to run under Windows XP. Not absolutely sure this will work but you might want to give this a try.

Ok, now I know what I did wrong. Because of the fancy Vista user account administration I have to run C3C and C3CEditor as an administrator (right-click on icon, choose option 'run as administrator') if I want to save my saves and modded biq-files in the original places. Otherwise any saved file will be thrown into a hidden C:/Users/username/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/Program Files/Infogrames Interactive/Civilization III/Conquests/Saves or Scenarios folder where it can be accessed by this user from the game and the editor like any other save or biq (the game/editor sees no difference), but it's hard finding them if you want to clean out old stuff.

Thanks Takeo! Running under XP made no difference to my file problem, but in the Compatibility tab I found a check box for always running the program as an administrator, which made the right-click procedure mentioned above unnecessary.
