Walls and Gunpowder Bombard

I fired up World Builder and noticed something unexpected. I create an enemy city with City Walls and noticed that my Cannon reduced the defenses by 10% instead of 12%. So Walls and Castles do protect against Gunpowder units it seems. Also, later on with other Cannons it was only reducing defense by 9%. Does anyone else see this? My game is modded quite a bit but I doubt anything relating to this has been changed.

Did you try the bombard prior to putting in the wall? IS the % bombard a range rather than a set value?

Did the log say it reduced it by that much? The mechanics of bombardment can get a little confusing with gunpowder bombardment as they subtract from the maximum value, which at the time of Cannons is very often the 100% from Walls. The reduction is split proportionally between the built fortifications and the culture. This results in what can seem to be quite random bombardment effects, despite the log telling you it removed the same and correct amount each time.

So to an extent Walls and Castles do impact bombardment from post gunpowder seige.

Works as expected without Walls: -12%

Note that the web page on this site (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/info/improvements) is wrong about Walls. The latest version of BTS has Walls with 50% Defense (except vs gunpowder-based units) and -50% damage to Defenses from Bombard (except gunpowder-based units).

Ah right, I thought it was something like that. Someone mentioned in another thread that Walls/Castles don't help against Gunpowder-based units but I remember that I was having trouble recently against Castles with Cannons.

attacking gunpowder units into a city ignore any bonus granted via walls. They don't ignore the bonus granted via culture.

Also, I think that you will find that cannons are siege and not gun powder units.

...but as mentioned, Cannon _do_ get a bonus in Bombard vs Walls/Castles even though they are not Gunpowder Class Units.

The Pedia uses the term "except vs. gunpowder-based units" - there is a difference between Gunpowder Class Units (like Rifleman, Musketman) and "Gunpowder-based units".

"Gunpowder-based units" are defined in the xml as having bIgnoreBuildingDefense set to 1 and this value is set for ALL units starting with Gunpowder technology. Stealth Bomber is a Gunpowder-based Unit for instance.

I'm not familiar with how it distributes bombardment, but if you bombard a walled/castled city, then switch to a non-gunpowder unit, it will switch backed to the walled defense, which will not be reduced by the full amount.

Extreme example: 20% cultural city with wall/castle. So should 2 cannon bombardment shots reduce the defense to 0, since 12 x 2 = 24? Well for your non-gunpowder units, so instead the castle defense is reduced by some proportion, which is sane and reasonable.

Also if you tested on different turns, defense regenerates slowly after a few turns.

Watch what happens when you bomb, rather than bombard, a city which has a castle. The % damage done is a % of the original cultural defence, therefore it takes (for example) five raids by Stealth Bombers to reduce any city's defence to zero whether that original defence was 20%,125%, or anything in between.
Whether the same applies to bombardment I cannot say. I just like bombing.
