The most improved feature of Civ3 (in my opinion) is the motive for war.
Ofcourse you need to expand, but then what? Once you get big, it doesn't pay of as much as the earlier civ games.
RESOURCES! The most important reason to wage war. I'm really glad that feature was included in Civ3.

Any disbelievers?

Resources have given more reason for war but Civ3 does tend to promote having an early war to gain an average sized empire so that for the rest of the game you should get every resource and will be in a position to increase territory in the future.

IMHO it's not just resources.
If you play on difficult levels it is impossible to catch up with AI early enough in both expansion and tech progress without starting an ancient war.

The units also have an impact in that alot of civs have an early UU they encourages an early war and that the ancient ages are usually the most balanced technologically so that war is reasonably easy especially if you are prepared.

I usually play random games and i hate when i get civ with early UU.
I know you can be very destructive having immortals or Mounted Warriors, but
I can't stand early Golden Age, it is such a waste.

When would you say was the best time to have a golden age then? Would it be acceptable to have a golden age in the period around knights?

Absolutely, the problem with early GA lays in Despotism form of government and you can't use those extra shields and gold. That is why i say early GA is a waste.
As soon as you switch to Republic or any other government GA has much bigger effect. There are many other forum threads that discuss this issue.
Personally, I'd rather have late golden age (best timing would be an early industrial age but that hardly ever happens).
