Sup guys. So here is the deal. Last night I was playing on Noble with Elizabeth and I had built up a HUGE army and was ahead at least two or three techs ahead of the other 4 civs so I lined up my army on two of the civs borders and declared war on both of them.

Normally this would be suicide but I had already started pumping out tanks and marines like crazy. Anyway to make a long story short I broke through their lines and took over both of their capitals and then I was thinking what the hell why not wage war on the other two remaining civs since I've already reached their borders.

Well right about that time I started noticing that none of the cities I had conquered were producing any commerce and a couple of turns later I received a message saying some of my military units were being disbanded because of lack of commerce??!! What?!! Right about that time the two remaining civs I declared war on launched a counter offensive and now because my units are disappearing they are closing on my borders quickly. What gives?? Anyone ever experience this? What a mess! Now I know how the Germans felt when their Russian offensive failed and was shoved back like a rag doll.

The cities you conquered are costing too much in support. You ran out of money and couldn't support your units any more. Try razing cities next time so you don't have to pay to support them.

Also, during that switch, you should switch to merchantilism for a free merchant. You don'y get trade routes with your enemies, anyways.

It sounds to me like you built up too large of a military for your civ size. If you started losing military units, that means you had no money, plus your science was at 0%. So most likely most of your money was going to support your military.

Probably would have been smarter to have a slightly smaller military and taken on the civs 1 at a time, than having an absolutely huge (and very costly) military and take em all on at once.

Just my opinion, I may be wrong.

I think it's more a matter of living within your means. If you can support a big military then you should try to increase it. If you start to dip into the red, then you should halt military production until you are out of the red.

If you are going for a quick conquest/domination win you might find yourself at war with multiple civs for better turn efficiency. Usually, it's better to fight as few at a time as possible. Fighting a war on two fronts is more difficult than just focusing on one at a time but it can win the game faster sometimes.

also, if you declare so many wars you get massive war wariness very soon, which reduces your income.

War weariness from declaring too many wars (lots of unhappy people throughout your empire, not just from the newly conquered cities), no commerce coming out of the new cities (most of the AI loves farms), too many units for your economy, sounds familiar. Happened to me before I had currency once. That was a quick loss. Mercantilism and state property would have helped alot, if I had the tech. I didn't realize I had built too many units and that third city killed me and I didn't think to move to caste system for the merchants.

If you have nobody willing to open borders with you (well, you were at war with all of them), mercantilism is an awesome civic.
