Los Angeles!!! Hell ya
I'm new to the Civ series (just got well duh...Civ 3). I love the game so far, but i kinda..........suck. On cheiftan, I'm usually the most advanced, but i suck at wars.

1.Okay, on one game, i decieded to take out the Germans ASAP. We have the same kind of units but they dont really make sense in how they fight. Archers and the same stats as Spearmen, but archers seems to win alot. And horsemen suck too, even though they have better stats. Can some explain this.

2.What's the best way to take a city? I bombard it but it does little damage which is fixed on the comps turn. I can send units, but they all die one by one as there sent, until finally i kill (only) one of the guards with 4 units of the same kind.

Thank you and merry christmas!!

First of all, spearmen and archers doesnt have the same stats, archers have good offense, spearmen have good defence, and horsemen are a fast moving unit with offence.
Basically, you should use spearmen for defence, archers against spearmen/horsemen and horsemen against archers /other horsemen. In wars its always important to build barracks to get veteran units. Also, better technology is reallly important(better units). When attacking cities you have to choices(always use seasoned units ;veteran, elite etc);you can put horsemen two squares away from the city and attack next turn so the enemy in the city cant attack you before you attack them,or bring catapults and archers near the city protected by spearmen so they wont be destroyed.Start firing with catapults, and the the archers....good luck

Pay a lot of attention to the terrain - if you, for example, attack across a river, or a unit that's stationed on a hill / mountain, the defender gets a huge bonus ;)

Of course, it also works vice versa :) :D :)

Maybe it's just me, but catapults have a so low bombard value that they never hit anything.
Besides, in ancient times, there are few roads. It takes foreeeeever to march a bunch of spearmen and catapults to the enemy city. And it costs almost the same to build those units. So, a bunch of 3 spearmen, 4 archers and 3 catapults against 10 horsemen. Guess who's likely to win, specially on open grounds?
Horses, dude, horses. And don't attack with 1 at a time. Sit on a mountain outside their city, and when the 6th horsemen arrives, throw all of them at the same turn.
