In warlords 2.08 / no mods this strange thing happened:

situation:
A couple of units were left in a city that had been culturally flipped one or two turns before by a neigbouring civ with whom I had open borders. A Viking destroyer (I was at war with them) obviously had sent a destroyer into the city after which I got the message:

"While defending your Grenadier was destroyed by a Viking Destroyer"

So how's this possible? I assume this is a bug of some sort.

I have another one, but this time, the other way around :D

"While defending your Warrior has killed a Viking Caravel".

Now you get this sort of thing when you use a Gunship to attack a city that has no real defenders except ships / planes, but this warrior had been in that place since the beginning of the game when it was mapping out territory but couldn't advance anymore due to cultural borders. I forgot about it until this message and it seems one of Huayna's settler had founded a city on top of it. Obviously I had open borders with him when this happened.

I just tested the idea. I was at war with Mehmed and both he and I had open borders with Saladin. So I opened up World Builder and placed a battleship belonging to Mehmed in one of Saladin's cities, and placed a warrior belonging to me just outside the city. Sure enough, when my warrior entered the city, I got the message that my warrior destroyed Mehmed's battleship.

I am not sure if its a bug, or simply the danger of using a neutral port in war-time.

I remember reading in either the manual or the civilopedia that naval units in cities are considered on land (the conext was so that a land unit with medic would help patch up the naval unit or vice versa). That explains why the naval and land unit were able to engage in combat with each other.

I wonder if the naval unit in this situation could capture the city?
