I wondered if it was normal that a nation that capitulated, later declares itself to be a free nation again
It doesn't seem to make any sence, since that nation only got one city left, and had a serious technological gap.

Alpha Centauri also has the surrender option, but in that game a nation never seemed to come back on it's decission to undo the surrender, untill it had grown sufficiently strong. But even then it didn't happen so often.( Since both games came from Firaxis ... I thought there would be some logic in there. )

So is this a bug, or just a :crazyeye: deranged AI :crazyeye: ?
I've already started a post about it here , but since I couldn't move it ...

How much did Monte grow? IIRC, if a vassal gets to be twice your size then he can break free too.

My guess is that your vassal lost more than half of his land since the time he capitulated, but a save (from just before he broke free) would be nice to confirm.

That would be a yes (more or less half his remaing tiles), but he didn't loose it to any enemies.
He lost it to me, by means of an artist who enhanced the cultural rate of a nearby city with a fresh master piece.

A nation that has capitulated, shouldn't be freeing itself, just because you've a lot more culture then they do.
If the tiles were lost to culture of an enemy nation, I'd understand. But by your own .... that just doesn't make any sence to me ...

Well, it is a documented rule is that if the vassal loses more than half of his land, he may break free, so this is not a bug.

Whether or not this makes sense is another story. :)

I had an experience in a game last night that I thought was pretty odd.

I was on my way to a conquest victory when the last civ (persia) offered capitulation. Figuring this would give me the win, I accepted. But instead, the game continued.

(Eventually, I just waited for my recently taken cities to pop their borders so I could get the 70% land necessary for a domination win.)

It seems to me that in the situation where all remaining AI civs are either vassals or have capitulated, you should get the conquest victory.
