Warlords crash/hard reboot

I just got Warlords and have had an issue. Randomly while playing the game, the video will cut out and then it will cause a hard reboot of the computer. Civ4 v1.61 worked perfectly for me. It doesn't seem to be based on whether I'm playing a particular scenario or if the Turks are involved. It has happened so far in both a regular single player game and in the Barbarians scenario.

I'm not really an expert at any of this stuff, so if anyone has any advice on accessing logs or whatever to at least diagnose a cause, I'd appreciate it.

System specs:
athlon 64 4000+
2gb ram
geforce 7800GT 256mb
2x 250gb sata (RAID-0)

My game crashes too randomly after I've played for some time... It just throws me straight to desktop and gives no error report whatsoever. Once I had to reboot after the game just simply halted my entire system. GPU temp. 92 C... Any suggestions how to lower that temperature or is it normal to have such high temp. playing civ?

btw. I didnt have any problems playing the normal game, but after installing the expansion I started to get these crashes..

Moderator Action: Moved to Civ 4 technical support

To get crash logs, do the following:

  1. Open the control panel.
  2. Double-click on the 'system' icon.
  3. Click the 'advanced' tab.
  4. In the 'startup and recovery' section, click on 'settings'
  5. Inthe 'system failure' section, uncheck the option for 'automatically restart'.

That will mean that instead of a automatic reboot, you will get a 'blue screen of death' - that will hopefully give you some info about what caused the crash.

Try restricting the max frame rate in ini to 30 or 40. It seems like a lot of Nvidia cards are crashing when the frame rate is left unrestricted.

I just got Warlords, and now I have had my first CTD's, and screens filled with bizarre colours while I'm being told the system is dumping physical memory.

The game works fine for a couple of hours (What can I say!) but then I get CTD without warning or the multicolour screen of "dumping physical memory".

1.6Ghz
786Mb RAM
256Mb GE5500

Game ran perfectly with only minor slowdown late game on Standard Maps with Vanilla Civ with 1.61 loaded.

Aargh!

i took the advice up above and started monitoring my core temp. i run the game in windowed mode, so its easy if you use atitool (despite the name, the newest version now functions with nvidia, at least as far as temp monitoring is concerned) to watch the temp while you play the game. i also took some time to clean out the case, and that seems to have solved the problem. warlords does seem to run hotter in general than vanilla civ, though, im not sure from a technical stnadpoint if that makes any sense whatsoever.

I have exactly the same problem. I tweaked the settings on the ini file, just like it was explained in another thread, and the game just crashes to desktop, at least it doesn't reboot the system now. Windows also reboots randomly after crashing. What can I do? I can't just leave the case opened because this is a laptop. My specs are on my sig.

I am pretty sure this isn't (just) an overheating problem.
My PC his highend (3GHz, Geforce 7800, 2GB RAM...) and isn't even close to overheating when the game freezes the entire PC without possibility to recover but pressing reset.
It happens more and more quickly the futher I progress in the game. I can usually play until the middle ages, then only an hour, after the next crash maybe a minute.
This is simply a game error, I've never seen such an unstable game since I play them. ThHe crash reports on this forum are overwhelming comapared to anything I've read about a game before. I hope they will fix this somehow or Civ 4 will remain on my shelf since after testing Warlords for our magazine I've AGAIN returned Civ 4 to the shelf because it's simply unplayable.
