Hey all, read what just happened to me in the city...

Someone on the street said "Hi young man, may I ask you how old you are?" Apparently, he was one of those who try to make you buy stuff, sign petitions etc., so I was skeptical but thought I might listen to him first. I told him I'm 18, then he asked me whether I have a TV. I said no, he reacted in a surprised way but then told me he's from a company that looks for people to subscribe for TV magazines, but they als osell other magaziens. So he asked me whether I'm into magazines, and I said yeah. As an example, I said I read that conservative magazine now and then, so he asked me whether I might do that thing and test it for 4 weeks (one issue a week) and then they'd call me and ask me whether or not I'd subscribe to it. That sounded good, I'd just take the first 4 issues and then say no, thus paying nothing for 4 week long entertainment. So he took me to the desk which they had prepared and gave me the form. He asked me about my street adress and phone number, which I gave him. He wanted to see my passport to have an official source for my real name etc. that was no problem. Then he asked me to show him my bank card so they could get my bank account registration number; after I'd decide to subscribe, they'd need to get money, and they would ask me to give them permit before actually taking money from my bank account. It still seemed very serious, the magazines they offered are famous and have srt of good reputation, but I was already suspicious here. I didn't want to tell him I'd only take the first 4 free issues, so I gave it to him, he even signed the form later, and told me he stands for it with his name and all.

So it all seemed like a subscribing procedure which I could abuse for a month, just with a bit of personal information to give. So both of us signed the form and I even got a copy of it, yet I felt somewhat stupid for signing something on the street, though I had felt very clever in the beginning.

Now that I read this form, it tells me about a 24 month subscription, no word of a 4 week testing. Shock. It seems I can still cancel it within the next 2 weeks, and now I also understand why is is supposed to be a 4 week testing, because once those 4 weeks are over you will have no chance to cancel it, unless they really call and ask you, which I doubt they will do.

So what do you think? Should I feel secure, wait until the 4 weeks are over and tell them I don't like the mags. Or go there now, punch him, kill him, burn the form. or what?

BTW, after I asked him, he also told me they'll keep adress etc. a secret and won't selll the information to advertising companies or anything...

go there now, punch him, kill him, burn the form

Do it man, cancel the subscription or you will be paying for a year.
Anyway ,it was pretty stupid to sign something that you didn't read before. They are probably nibbling at youre money right now.Even if youy cancel it ,expect atleast some cash flow from this.(they wiil find something ,like port cost ,..)

You must wath out with this sort of sellers. They push you into a situation where you as consumer loses a lot of it's rights, they misuse trading laws.

I will be paying for 2 years if I don't cancel it now...

I've rea on the thing that only the written stuff there counts, anything he told me was nonsense... so I'll have to act quickly, but a consumer protection comment on the paper says the contract only counts if I don't cancel it within 2 weeks... I might now wait for the firt issue and then cancel the thing, if it arrives within 2 weeks :p

but they have my street adress :(

I warned you ,if was you ,i would can,cel it right now.and cancel it on a way that you are sure they will cancel it.You know ,by writing a letter that they must sign to prove that they've got it.You don't want to start a law suite against them afterwards.

Hey, yeah it was pretty lame what you did you shopuld have asked for his ID too. But when you send them a letter, you could make them sign the postal worker for acceptence.

And for being too late for the letter to arrive. Put the date on your letter, so you will always be secure that they don't **** you.

Good luck, veel geluk.

What on earth were you thinking of giving a stranger your address and your card details? Do you realise how easy it is to buy things on the net once you've got details like that? I'd be tempted to shut down the card right now before you lose anything more than what they may have already taken from your account. I'm not saying that these people will definitely steal from you, but even if the man who took those details works for a reputable company and was completely on the level, what if he gets fired one day? It'd be a handy source of cash. I thought goodyhut was daft for putting his address on this site (and I have no plans to go and visit him) for all to see, but giving your address and card details to a man in the street is just daft!

Don't be giving bank card #s to anyone.

Shouldve told the f*cker to send an invoice if they needed payment. If he refused, say "byebye".

Its a con basically. Maybe a legal one, but a con regardless.

thanks for the advice... yes, it was stupid, the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced by that conclusion.... even the fact that the only things that made the contract nice were those which he told me, in spoken words, and then I read that means sh!t if it isn't written down, which it isn't... :(

Tomorrow, I'm going to send the storno letter (the only way for me to cancel it) and I'm also going to open a new bank account tomorrow, and transfer all my money to the new one... at my age I get a free bank account at some banks... never mind, I might end up losing not a penny, with a bit of luck, but my personal information is lost.... but then, I don't mind others knowing my phone number and my street adress, it's just the bank information that makes me sick...

BTW, I have just been out getting a bank statement... it says there hasn't been any money taken from my account since I was at the automat a few days ago... but those statements are not very up-to-date, I'm going to get another one tomorrow...

(it's late at night here now)

Now...this is easy to get out of. All you have to do is close your bank account, move, change your phone number, and change your name. Simple. :D

yeah, you're right about the bank account... apart from that, what can they do... hassle me at home? :p

if they knock at my door, I'll ask what they want from me... then they'll tell me they want to sell me something... I'll as kthem where they got my adress from... they'll tell me it is a secret. I'll kick them down the stairs...

and THEN I will stick out my tongue :p

I'm mad at them, honestly... and I'm mad at myself...

One peice of advice: Never, ever, ever give out your credit card number, debit card number, bank account number, or what have you to anyone in a situation like that. And try not to give out your home address or phone number either.

Consider yourself extraordinarily lucky if you actually did subscribe to a magazine. Why? Because that's one of the oldest cons in the book. Certian individuals can take that info and rob you blind and you won't even know about it untill your statement comes. And if not your money then your house or your car. Believe me, I've seen it done hundreds of times;)

Don't ever use Valet parking either, there are a hundred cons with that too.

being younger than 27 and still in education, I used my chance to open a free bank account (with good interest :D) at another bank and ordered my other bank to shifzt 95%+ of my money to that new account... they can't harm me that bad any more now... and I also sent the storno letter with the mail today, so I think I did quite well in limiting of damage...

damn, what a shock, never again :(

The next time you see this guy:

Tell him that you don't want the magazines after your dad, who's a veteran police detective, read through them.

I'd love to see the look on the guy's face then :goodjob:

Thats a good idea but you could just avoid them in the first place...You don't have to talk (well listen really) to them so don't
