I have a dumb question about wealth....

In civilization 2, when you wanted a city to produce money, you put it on capitalization, which is like wealth in civ 3. This turned each shield into one gold, so a city making 25 shields would make 25 gold a turn.

From what I see, in Civ 3 when you switch to wealth, you get one gold a turn no matter how many shields. Is this right? Doesn't this seem like a ripoff? It makes hardly any difference in the budget.

I have not progressed enough in a game yet without starting over. I never finished a civ3 game yet, and did not get past infantry. Is there a capitalization tech that comes later?

I think it has something to do with the amount of citizens and also the type of government your civ is in.

I've gotten a lot more than 1gp when switching a large city to wealth in democracy.

In Civ 3, I think the default rate is 8 shields for 1 gold. Other factors affect it; if I remember correctly, Economics will cut this in half to 4 shields to 1 gold. I'm not sure how governments change this value.

You can also use the editor to change this value, in the General Settings tab.

Yep CamDawg, you're right.

Governments change the production rates and therefore the wealth values accordingly, but at the same ratios.

Ok then maybe I was mistaken. Maybe I was seeing small cities give only one gold. Is there a capitalization that comes late in the game like in Civ 2 that changes each shield to one gold?

I have strongly come to believe that you should almost NEVER use the wealth setting in CIV3 if you expect to play competitively on any level.

Here's a link to a post on the subject in the current democracy corruption thread:

The conversion factors of shields to gold and then gold back to improvements and/or units will cause you to waste four times as many shields to accomplish the same task as can be accomplished by other means.

Do not use wealth except in a few very rare circumstances where your need to balance the budget in an emergency for just one or two turns.

I modded the game so that wealth produces 1gold/ 6 shields, 3 after economics. I think it will be okay this way. It's a shame some games features are sooooo unbalanced, I'd rather mod them to make the game funner

The reason for only one gold is because of rounding. Since if you produce from 1-7 shields you will get 1 gold. If you produce 8-15 shields you get 2.

Like Cracker said you should not use wealth if you are going to be doing any rushing. Since it is much better to build a unit, send it over to the target city and disband.

However, when you are not doing any real building, wealth is useful since it allows you to set your science and luxery rates higher. In my games, I often have a few major cities on wealth to balance my budget. Otherwise I would never be able to keep up my science research.
