Hi all fellowcivvers.
First off all,Great game-forum!Second, finally i like Civ again,after Civ 3 what i think was more then bad i tried civ4 and warlord, didn't like it both at all.
Still i bought BTS because Sid did it once for me with Alfa Centauri.And Yes i love it again,not sure why but its the overall feeling(not only spies even i build so many probe's in AC that when there was a sunblock(no communication possible) a complete nation was nerve gas away :D.

i played a couple of games on one level below Monarch and won them pretty easy,mostly because at warfare the Ai is not that strong.But now iam playing on monarch and its the 4 time i open the quick save to start all over :) Long story and completely irrelevant so here the Q.

1. if a cat/treb have better combat odds are the retreat odds also increased?
2. if city/culture defense is lower are the retreat odds from a cat/treb increased?
3. What are the best upgrades for a cat or treb?
4.Is it a better tactic to use cav for damaging the city defense hard targets? to me it looks like i got much better retreat odds.
5. is it smart to found a own religion on monarch and spread it fast to a couple of nonbelievers or is this already to expensive?
6.Iam trying Monarch with Sitting Bull,how bad of choice is this?They look great and those dog-units in combination with elephants is working well.
7.First strike,I read a lot already on this forum some way to complicated for me to understand,but what i wonder is when there is combat there are a couple off rounds/blows both side but how much damage is is one round/blow?
8.what is a easy check to see if i installed that Bru.patch correct? Thx Bhruic for all that good work.
9. is there a way i can change my forumname?

Thats all..for now.

.

1) your retreats odds decrease with better Combat Odds, retreat odds a calculated over the change you lose a battle. example:
You have a retreat odd of 10% in a 50% change combat, you have 5% change of retreating your unit, if you have a 10% in a 80% combat, you have only 2% of retreat change.

2) The city defense is a part of the Combat, and thus increasing your win change, and thus decreasing your retreat change.

3) I love trebuchets with Drill promotions, they are great at city attack. But you can't get wrong with Accuracy and Barrage promotions.

4) Cavalry has 30% of retreat change, so that is not bad. But i prefer Siege units as they have collateral damage

5) A own religion is almost always good, as long your neighbors share it.

6) Almost every leader can be used, as long it's traits and UB and UU servers you. I mean, if you don't start a war in the ancient era, a Dog Soldier is worthless.

7) there a threads on this forum explaining this. I can't explain it in a few lines.

8) I wouldn't know.

9) nope, but it's a good name ;)

Quick answers for most of these (and don't worry, if I'm wrong there will be someone correcting soon :lol:):

1. and 2. - Combat odds for these ARE the retreat odds. With the latest patches, Cats and Trebs (and Cannons and Arty) can only inflict so much damage, then they retreat. XP is earned if they survive, as if they had won combat;
3. - I split upgrades between the Bombard line OR the City Attack/Accuracy line. Then I can have the Bombard group take the city down to 0%, and the CA group whittle down the defenders before sending in the main attack. (Keep in mind that using Spies to send a city into revolt also reduces the % to 0%, but only for one (1) turn. Your choice.);
4. - (See 3., above) Cat/Treb/Cannon/etc. are best for whittling down defenders, but be prepared to lose some of them in the process. Fire and forget...
5. - I find it's good to try for a religion, if only for the various Religion civics that give you bonuses for having a State Religion. As for spreading to other Civs: Having a Civ that's the same religion as you boosts relations, and is kind of necessary for making the Apostolic Palace mean anything;
6. - Sitting Bull is kind of a pain to play against, but I never play him. Others can comment more accurately on this;
7. - There are some threads on this; First Strike is one of my favorite promotions for straight-up attacking units, but I'm not a math expert;
8. - If your workers build Railroads while automated, you've got it :p ;
9. - Once you post over 100 times and get to "Warlord" on the forums, you can change your title, but not name, I think. (Again, haven't done it myself, so...)

1. with the latest patch, yes.
2. yes
3. depends on what you're up against. If you're up against a large stack of longbows, suicide one or two by giving it barrage, with/for good combat odds, city raider is best
4. well, if you don't get good odds with a CR siege weapon, then suicide one or two barrage siege weapons first, and then the CR siege weapon.
5. Why found a religion if AI can do it for you? Capturing a Holy city is cheaper then founding one.
6. I don't like him. Things that affect my decision for choosing a civ/leader:
a) difficulty: on emperor, I prefer strong leaders (Ramesess, Ghandi, (russians).
b) personal affection: UU looks nice/is nice to play with, city names are nice, own country (Netherlands), etc.
c) new challenges: try a new tactic, for this, Sitting Bull could be my choice.

A good rule of thumb re. first strikes is take the promotion if you are fighting a unit of similar modified strength , but if you are considerable weaker it serves little purpose

As you progress up the drill line it is even better due to defense against collateral damage so when seige really comes into play you will want drill units for defense(if your best two defenders come out of a bombardment unscathed you are in a far better position to hold the city).........plus they are better at counter attack than city garrison.

As for founding a religion..........re ask the question in 2034.....by then a consensus may have been reached

For siege (those that can ONLY retreat - i.e., cannot kill a unit), the retreat odds are the combat odds. For mounted (or any unit that can retreat), the odds to retreat are constant (based upon ability and promotions) but the odds that the battle will result in a withdrawal is decrease as that unit gets better odds at actually killing the defender.

With siege it is entirely possible that your attack will not appreciably damage the actual defender, even though collateral damage is being caused. When this occurs you can either hope for better luck/rolls or use a different unit. Flanking 2 mounted units are immune to first strikes and have a good chance of retreat. These are very useful to damage those one or two really tough defenders. The best time to use them is once the secondary defenders are weakened by suicide siege but before your city raider siege attacks. How many siege and mounted are needed depend upon the number and composition of the defenders. Highly City raider trebs should be treated just like city raider maces, used with above average odds at worse (basically, use the CR treb instead of a flanking 2 horse if the horse probably won't kill the defender but the treb has a good chance to withdraw. This is really a "feel" thing that you just have to try and learn and judge for yourself.

Another way to look at it:

A siege unit WITHDRAWS if it WINS (dealing only partial damage)
A siege unit DIES if it LOSES

A mounted unit KILLS if it WINS
A mounted unit WITHDRAWS if it LOSES (or dies)

what he said.......if a mounted unit is going to be killed (loses a battle on its last hit points), a seperate dice roll is taken to see if it withdraws ,the odds varying on how many flanking promos it has

"As for founding a religion..........re ask the question in 2034.....by then a consensus may have been reached" :lol:

I like to found a religion, if only for psychological purposes, to feel like I'm not completely losing a game lol
