from my experience, its very hard to have a growing funding during Republic and Democracy.. i play on Monarchy, and i find its all most impossible to maintain my army during Republic/Democracy (my army size is usually atleast 50) in these ages. (i usually put my research on 100, to have the tech lead... or atleast try) .

so i prefer the Dep/Communism style, where u can have a large empire, no cost to support ur army, and rush build once in a while just to kill off some of those unhappy citizens:)and even when my science is on 100, i still get about 3-7 gold per turn

in my view, i just pick the government that gives u the best economy, and rep/demo just gets dragged down by all the building/unit upkeeps..( i build temple + courthouse or library +courthouse in each city, plus marketplace+bank+harbour+airport if i get the smith trading company)

can u guys tell me how to support the economy???

I build marketplaces, banks, and all that, and build roads and railroads everywhere. I find so hard to support my economy if I am not in Democracy.

First of all: Marketplaces are very important. They not only increase earned money, but also produce happy faces.

One of the things that make Republic/Democracy worth using is that you can set research to lower level than under other governments, and get the same speed of research plus extra money from taxes.
For example if under Commusim your research is set to 100%, you discover new tech every 6 turns, and get 10 gold every turn, when you switch to Democracy you can set research to 80% still discover new techs every 6 turns but get 100 gold each turn.
I made up these numbers, they are not from a a real game. I just wanted to show how it works.

And army of size 50 is not so big, you should be able to pay the maintenance for it easily under Democracy.

Always build Marketplaces in your cities, for the aforementioned reasons and also because only after you build a Marketplace can you build a Bank, which generates even more revenue. Only after you build a Bank can you build a Stock Exchange (in PTW), and only after you a certain amount of Stock Exchanges can you build Wall Street, etc. Definitely get those Marketplaces!

Also, be sure that all of your worked tiles have roads on them. You should never have idle Workers, unless it is very late in the game (and even then you'll be cleaning up pollution); if those Workers have nothing to do, have them build roads on all of your city tiles. An extra commerce point per tile can really add up.

Do what you can to reduce corruption in your cities. Go with better forms of government, build Courthouses/Police Stations, place the Forbidden Palace in a good place, etc. Reduced corruption means more gold as well as more production.

Finally, be active in trading techs with the AI. In the mid/late game you can usually score lucrative gpt deals for technology and luxuries, and even in the early game that extra gold doesn't hurt. This also improves relationships with other civs, improving your chances of staying out of a costly war.

just read the readme text and desciptions.goverment,market,bank,corruption.courthouse,police stations, maintains, road and railroad, smith's trading post,Forbidden palace, commercial dock, stock exchances.and get a small army of course.always use democracy
i have game that discover a tech every 5 turns and i get 785 gold per turn.

I've found out it's possible to go through the last three ages in republic with no real problems. Sure there is some war weariness, but it is much less than in democracy and you are still able to generate enough cash to support everything you need (4 turn research in the modern age while making 450 gpt!). By staying in republic, you avoid the extra research involved and only have one period of anarchy in the entire game.

The other advantage of Democracy, besides its lower corruption (compared to Republic and Monarchy, that alone is more income and science), is the faster worker rate. Democracy/Republic both give 1 more commerce/square, compared to Monarchy.

I've been playing a game where in the Modern Age, I was getting techs at 4 turns each, had 96% happiness, AND was making about 800 gold/turn (and eventually it was even more). The happiness since has slid to 81% as I've gotten ALOT of specialists due to increase in city sizes, but I can research Future Techs at 4 turns each, and still maintain 1000 gold/turn and full happiness.

Democracy is by far the best government in my opinion, even when waging war. At least on the lower skill levels anyways, as most wars on Chieftain/Warlord don't last more than about 10 turns. If you have problems with war weariness, just declare peace with the AI, then declare war again the next turn. :) Usually if you're kicking their butt, you can make them give you a city or two for free when declaring peace. A win/win situation.

I have limited experience with Civ3, but I don't think this works. I've gotten into a new war just after ending a very long one and war weariness hit me immediately.
