What do you think of Portugal?

Welcome to CFC cimbalino....

another member from my town :band:

@ cimbalino: Bem vindo amigo :)

I dig Portugal now, because of my most recent game. Standard map, Roaming barbs, everything else random. I had the 2nd smallest amount of land, and here are the standings, after I achieved diplomatic victory (without even 1 (!) war being waged).

btw- could someone explain to me what 'military service' means? it's confused me since I first got civ3

I must agree with others that have said it before me, what does it matter as to who discovered what, what matters is who controlled what and the affect that had on the controlled areas.

Portugal may have discovered a lot, but to what end, by the mid 16th Century they had been absorbed by Spain to create an Iberian Super-power until the mid 17th Century, whereby Britain and France picked up the imperialist flags and began conquering the world and leaving Iberia wallowing in its own financial destitution.

Hey man, in those times getting in a boat and sailing to the unknown was a big thing .... Portugal(as others) made it ..... and that matters .

Just think that in the future some civ like china beats the USA to colonize the mon or mars.....

Wath would you think about the USA being the first in the mon and in mars ? not matters

And remember sailing to the unknown in those times was a much bigger thing than going to the mon today ... the risck was much greater

You're right

oh and sorry about all that yelling

I think we all got a little carryed away with all the whats more important stuff

the true is (as another poster already said) exploration was and is very important and so was and is colonization. Both had a very important affect on the world.

Hey everyone!!!
Stop that, quit all the 'who did this, discovered that...'
Spain discovered California and Portugal discovered California too. Are you happy now? And this is true 'cause the fleet was spanish and guy comanding it was portuguese. Ok? Well hope everyone's satisfied.
All nations have their prides and great moments (others not so great...), but now we're here to share, not to fight what's gone. The Dutch we're great (a little pirates though), the Spanish we're great (a little "let's genocide"), the english we're great (did I mention pirates before?), the portuguese we're great (a little "rape the natives"), so real world wasn't perfect, right?
Get back to the game and enjoy it, no piracy, rape or extermination will damage our rams, agp's or processors...

And don't forget all you football lover's (soccer 4 Americans) Euro2004 is coming! Come and visit, everybody's welcome.

hey you do know that the English also comitted acts of genocide against the indigenous populations of North America and the Aborigines of Australia

and that the Portuguese were the main traders and users of slaves from Africa that they brought to Brazil, but they weren't the only country that did this as I'm sure all of you know

also Portuguese men weren't the only ones who raped the natives, some Spanish, English, French men and I'm sure other men from other countries/cultures have done the same.

I'm sorry I just couldn't leave that statement alone you make it sound like the English were the best of that group and you failed to mention the French

Does any of this stuff even matter? Geeeze... portugal is just a spanish colony anyway.

They are a good civ to play in the game on certain map types. Take the rest to a history forum.

(been dying to say that for a long time)

@ SKORN: btw- could someone explain to me what 'military service' means? it's confused me since I first got civ3

On the Demographics screen: Military Service is roughly the %age of your population that is a militaristic unit (look on your military advisor screen (F3) and it will show you how many military units you have and what denomination they are.)

This translates the % into "years of service" (obviously a bogus connotation, but useful in comparing the %age size of your military to others).

Example: You have 100 military units and France has 100 military units, but France has a larger Population than you, then you will have a greater Military Service than France. (Even though the # of military units are the same, when the # is divided into the 2 population figures, because you have a smaller overall population, you will have a % of your population devoted to military.)

Hope that helps.

And btw: this is just a game people, try to put it in this context before flaming each other for National Pride. Every nation is both great and has committed its share of atrocities.

My 2 cents.

Catalunya may be a spanish colony, just like Galicia or the Basque Country or even Andalucia; In fact they may be Castilla's colonies, that is why they have terrorists and "independentistas" all over. Spain has "paella" and Portugal has "feijoada". They have "castanuelas" and we have "cavaquinho". Other culture, other language other country, not a colony.
The only thing we have in common is something huge, fantastic and GREAT: CIVILIZATION.

Hey Nalves, thanks! Maybe we'll see around!
Nalves, obrigado. Talvez a gente se veja por aí!

Rule: ALWAYS attack Civ with Pyramids (or put someone doing the dirty work for you), or you'll end having a serious contestant :p
