What do you use your gold for?

The notion that upgrading units is a waste of gold in many occasions occured to me also. Another thing is turning towns into cities. I do it whenever i can. Not sure if that is the wisest thing to do.

I think I mentioned in another thread but my emerging rule of thumb for antiquity is to have just enough cities to get one each of the future tech and future civic.

Not sure how viable it is to aim for a second as the turns to research from future tech/civic 1 to 2 seem to quadruple.

I managed last night to finish antiquity with two full cities and a third I had converted and started developing to dump my gold stockpile (taking the economic golden age) and got both future tech 1 and future civic 1. I have been increasingly going influence heavy and focusing on CS's to get free techs and repeatedly running steal tech and steal civics once I have gotten all available CS's.

Still learning and refining a lot and I thing from what I learnt last night, playing the same game I would probably have converted the third city earlier and maybe have been able to get future tech and civic 2.

I think i spend the most gold on buying buildings in cities in towns. Sometimes civilian units, too. I usually build military units in cities instead of buying them (unless it's an emergency) because they're typically a bit cheaper than buildings.
