You know... ever since Civ 1 I haven't actually known what fortify does. It makes them take a defensive looking stance in Civ3 but what does it actually do?

does it increase their defense by 1? or add a defensive bonus as if they were on a hill?

it increases your defense by 25%, this is in addition to any other defensive bonuses you get(terrain, city, across river, ect..)

alright, cool. I was never sure before, I'll make sure to fortify units after attacking when possible in the future then.

You might get better odds that I do when I fortify an elite mech on a mountain, and a conscript warrior is attacking across a river at my mech. :)

Are you sure its not by 50%? This is what i've always thought...

EDIT: Ach well

According to the civilopedia it's 25%, but we all know how much that can be trusted.

I'm pretty sure that the pedia is right for once though.

When you fortify a unit, during your turn, you won't go over to the unit and have to move it, to un fortify, click on the unit. When the unit is fortified in one of your cities or outside cities, fortifying also helps heal units, if you build the small wonder battlefield medicine, then you'll be able to fortify units in enemy territory and they'll heal.
