What does one tile represent...

I'm not sure; but I thought I read somewhere that 1 tile represented 100 X 100 miles. I can be mistaken.

It all depends on map size. On some maps one tile may represent a whole state (like my state, Wisconsin), while on larger maps that same state may require 4 or 5 squares.

It doesn't really represent anything. Just a spot on the map. :) After all, with the editor you can make a map of the world, and Wisconsin is 1 tile, and you can make a map of Wisconsin, where all of them are. ;) It just depends on what you want it to be. In the regular game, there's really no defined size, even though there's some sort of algorithm it goes through to find the total size of an empire. Kind of like how many tanks does a Modern Armor unit represent? It depends on the circumstances.

Assuming a world map 100 tiles across, and a global circumference of 25,000 miles, that would be 250 miles per tile. When units attack, they are attacking across the boundary between tiles. Each turn takes at least one year. Sometimes the tiles represent strategic distances, and sometimes tactical distances (such as artillery shooting over a tile that would be hundreds of miles across). This is one of the primary abstractions that makes Civ what it is; sometimes strategic, sometimes tactical.

Well from the demographics page it is 100 square miles or 10x10 miles. Of course that would mean the Earth would be like 2kx1k tiles large.

I don't know, one tile on MY screen is about a half an inch, but then I have a 17 inch monitor..

:p

Off-Topic: Don't want to start a new thread, but while we're on translating Civ into real world....what does one pop point represent? I know I could do the math, but I don't feel like it....

You mean waht is the relation between the pop points and the cities' populations (which are told in the city info screen)? In that case I think it depends on several factors, including what era you're in. How exactly it works I have no idea, and judging from when this has been brought up before, I don't think anyone at CFC actually knows for sure how population is determined.

I always thought of them as between 10 x 10 and 20 x 20 km, for no other reason than that seemed to make the most sense given the ranges of artillery used (assuming that attacks are on the boundary).
