What I think is missing in RFC: The Hunt for OIL!

New time poster, long time player of RFC and I have absolutely LOVED it! But what I and I'm sure others have found boring about modern era is the lack of having to really hunt major resources such as oil!

I don't think I need to explain how and why it has become so vitally important in the real world but in RFC oil is too easy to come by! The modern Middle East is all but ignored by all non-middle east civs and there is no urgency for OIL.

The answer is simple: In RFC World oil is found in abundance! Germany, England, China, America, Russia all have it within their natural borders. And if Spain, France, Netherlands, Portugal survive to modern era they usually at least 1 oil somewhere in their colonial empire. Thus there is no urgency, no huge issue to try to secure the oil resources or places that produce lots of oil in the world.

I don't want to rant but I think the apparent abundance of resources in RFC which shouldn't be so easily available adds to the overall , eh, malaise and boredom of RFC in the modern era!

The only country I actively went out to find oil for was Japan, and IIRC you just have to get to one of the islands and cut the jungles before China (who don't seem to care) and Khmer (who seem to care even less).

I agree that a hunt for oil would be a great addition to the game but it would be very hard to code, I'd imagine. The AI just doesn't care enough atm, and as Rhye said will probably just stick to making Mech. Inf once they tech up :p

Germany has Oil within its Borders?

Yes, it's the Borneo (Kalimantan). And the AI's don't cut jungles outside of their borders.

Hi and welcome.

I think that removing some oil won't cause wars for oil. Will just cause a world without tanks and planes.

And that would be boring. However what about taking away the oil requirement for units and instead increasing the build time for those units while having an build bonus if you have access to oil? Oil would then still be important but even civs without oil could build those units (lets face it... Sweden doesn't have any oil but we can still make Volvos ;) ).

Again, that gives an advantage to civs with oil but the AI is not smart enough to actively go out and conquer the resources it needs (or trade for them apparently... I can't remember the AI ever asking me for a resource), which is what Sir_Myers was after.
