(what if) The rules should change!

1. Standard Score (Wonders, population, etc) (The early finish bonus score will be ignored for this purpose)
2. Date of Finish (Conquer the world, Spaceship) (Retirements and AI Space ships will count as 2020 A.D.)

I quite like this idea but I would like to had the following suggestion :
The date of finish points should not be rewarded according to your finishing date rank but according to your finishing date turn . The purpose of that is double : reward people who finished really early and nott penalize people who finished just 1 turn after 10 others people. This more or less goes with all the problem of the 'very not uniform' distribution law of finishing date (see results of GOTM II).
Giving or not 100 points for the first one to finish or for someone finishing 1st turn (or BTW 0 point for the last to finish or for someone finishing the last turn) is aanother probleme/discussion BUT I think that if we want to use this kind of scoring that we should a linear formula (between points and turns) for the date of Finish.

Jabah,
The reason I propose to assign points by rank order is to elimate the need to have points by formula which I think is the point of contention here.

It's a good theory, oryx. But there's one thing which I don't like:
There will be only two times the number of players of possibilities for the ranking score. E.g.: if there are 5 players, the scores for the normal score and finishing date will both be: 100, 75, 50, 25 or 0. So the total score of someone can only be: 200, 175, 150, 125, 100, 75, 50, 25 or 0. This will mean, that every game roughly 30% of all the participants will have the same score. That could be really nasty for the medal awarding. Should we look at the normal score, in case the ranking score is equal?

Matrix,
Rank scores do have their drawbacks and you have pointed out one of those. Some sort of tie break would be necessary! I guess it's back to the drawing board.

Although it's simple and understandable, rank order does fail to utilize a great deal of available information, as Jabah points out in his argument for turns not rank. We might consider simply calculating the z scores (with sign) both for each player's finishing turn and for his civilization score (referred to above as Standard Score). Then just add them together for a GOTM score. (Matrix could then convert that sum onto a 0 to 100 scale, if he wishes.) This would avoid the arbitrary aspect that is inherent in the formulas we've discussed above.

Cactus Pete,
You beat me to it. That's what I was going to suggest next: a synthesis of our 2 ideas (your part the z scores, my part the two categories). I tried it out using the GOTM2 results. The overall winner was the same, but the early finishers end up with a better placing than the other systems.
I'll send the spreadsheet to anyone who is interested.

Hey Oryx, you need to try it on the GotM#1 results and when the GotM#3 results come out on them to - that way you can better spot flaws in the system.

But what ever system we end up with, as long as everybody is happy is ok by me!!!

I could not apply it to GOTM 1, because I couldn't tell who lost (i.e. retire, AI spaceship). Otherwise I would have done so. Assuming that information is available for GOTM 3, I'll give it a shot.

Don't bother, oryx. I'm going to use my own (new) scoring system anyway. Nevertheless, thank you for the suggestion.

I'd say: keep 'em coming.

But we shouldn't look at the separate ranking alone and make a GOTM score out of that. It's too rough and if the differences between sequential players on the separate ranking differ too much it's becomes a less fair way of scoring.

But again: thanks for the suggestion. I hope I haven't removed all the enthousiasm out of you.
