What is the worst thing in Civ3 ?

LOL, Ision

Back to the topic, probably the worst thing is bugs, such as Scientific GL not working properly (no SGA), the sub bug, etc. These should be fixed in the very first patch, it is unnecessary to have to bring out patch after patch, changing little things like costs and such when there are serious bugs, the game isn't as playable.

...but still enjoyable!! ;)

What he said. How does something like one of the two things the SGL can do not working slip through their fingers without being fixed, much less almost 8 months later.

That's really odd. I'm running 512 and 1.8 and my turns take about four minutes or so...

Which is due to me playing Double your Pleasure with 24 civs on the largest map settings you can have. We maxed out the number of cities before the discovery of coal :king: And right now, everyone is at war with everyone else.

I've never had a problem with the speed of Civ3. I think the largest "problem" with Civ3 is the lack of truly advanced diplomacy options such as troop loaning (fighting a war by proxy would rule), and the attitude meter which penalizes you unfairly for a couple sticky diplomatic snafus (usually centered around mutual protection pacts).

But hey, been playing it three years straight... so... not that many problems.

Definitely the 8 Civ Diplomacy screen. Bugs can be fixed and performance can be adjusted but that dern 8 Civ diplomacy screen has been with us since CivIII version 1 and doesn't seem likely to be going anywhere soon. Making trades with everyone in the Shogun Conquest (or any game that has more than 8 Civs) is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome just waiting to happen. There are a couple folks who have worked out some interesting ways to read the .SAV file and show some information but as of now, no one has drawn up a utility to solve the problem. BTW, I'm volunteering if anyone wants to share their source code for reading the .SAV file. Will happily code the interface if you give me a class that reads the data! (Not that it would save all the clicking but would at least let you see the current state of wars and treaties!) Arrrrgh.

i hate the culture thing but that can be turned off

i hate the pollution thing too, having to send your workers forth and back every damn turn

but that can be modded off...lol

Barbs can be real annoying, so I turn 'em on sedentary so only Goodie Huts appear, and barb camps don't!

Easily, the worst part of the game for me is the battles.

I have no idea why Firaxis would let luck come in and ruin such a large portion of the gameplay.

I hate my random number generator. There is no reason why it should take eight cavalry (offense) to take down a single on of their cavalry (defense) when it's on a flat field.

I know! That alone drives me away from trying to win with a military conquest.

Wow, I've never had that kind of bad luck. Yes, I've lost a couple of battles due to RNG streaks, but never a war. In the long run, I find it evens out nicely. Numbers and strategy make up for it. This is one area that I hope they don't change to any major degree.

I have lost a few wars due to getting screwed by the RNG, but it's typically very early gambits.

I once had an entire front not collapsing thanks to a Flak killing off an attacking Tank. Hadn't it held, it just might have cost me the war.

Edit: I should add that I'm quite happy with the CivIII combat engine.

I hate the loading times, but that's probably due to the speed of my computer (350MHZ). I plan to have a new computer by the time that Pirates! is released.

I am happy with everything else though

Jebus, if I have to wait anywhere near 20 seconds between turns I get frustrated and stop playing. You people are willing to wait 1 to 30 minutes?!

Crikey. :P

I hate when you watch the AI units move around and around a city on roads
or railroads and they never really go anywhere   :smoke: :dubious: .

you can apparently modify your civIII-/ptw-/conquests.ini text file with the following line: "NoAIPatrol=1" anywhere in the file to get the AI to stop wandering around for no good reason. I've been told this dramatically reduces IT times in the IA. There was a thread about increasing the game screen resolutions () that brought up modding the .ini files, and someone brought this up there...

Me, I also hate babysitting workers, and also bombing cities with artillery during IA+MA wars... and of course::spear:

@sampedestal: I'm comforted to see the Spearmen actually lose sometime. ;)

Hell yes. That way you get truly epic games. There's nothing like watching 24 civs descend into civil war because the Persians and Ottomans didn't like each other. Then you can sit back, make a profit, and pick your target while everyone else is busy fighting everyone else.

It's fun. I have a TV right next to my monitor, plus you can always alt+tab to read these forums while you play :)
