Hi folks,
for some time I've been trying to find a specific version of Civ 2. Here is some review ( http://getabandonware.com/review/civilization-2/ ) where there is a picture of banking tech. Note that the tech has its own picture of some papers and below is the tech tree. My question is in the title - what version is this? Where can I download it? How can i make all the videos work (wonder movies, diplomacy animations, council movies)? Thanks in advance!

Welcome UrsaMauris.

This is classic Civ2. Sometimes referred to as the Vanilla version. There was a windows and a mac version (which came out later). I bought my mac version in 1996 and have been playing since. I believe if you get the multiplayer gold edition, it has the same look. Not sure about the Test-of-time version. You may still be able to buy these on EBay or Amazon from individuals.

After some hassle I found out today, too. It would never occur to me, that for some reason they would remove the feature from verions later on, at least MGE. But the biggest pain in the a** is that to play the classic civ I had to install a virtual pc for 32 bit system. So I have that figured out, but now new problem emerged, the game doesn't accept the CD so it doesn't play music. I think I'll move somewhere else in this forum with this issue but if you know something about this, please feel free to share your wisdom.

That is the right move. Technical support subforum is more appropriate for this kind of issues. I wish I could help; but I am still playing on my old mac which is over 20 years old.

Test of Time definitely had a more "modern" look.

Test of Time is available on eBay and Amazon. I've got a game going right now.

But rather than try to follow the instructions for installing it on a more modern computer, I bought a refurbished Windows XP computer. Test of Time plays just fine on it. And since it's based on Civ II, Civ II should work just as well.

Test of Time has a variation of Civ II on it (called Extended Original). The thing about ToT is that you have multiple layers of maps and it's critical to your strategy and city-building to think 3-dimensionally on 4 levels of maps. The Extended Original uses 2 levels of maps - you can play as one of the human factions or as the alien race from Alpha Centauri. The nice thing about that is that you get most of the game to spread your own civilization out since you've got the whole planet to yourself, and if you build the Great Library you still get the benefit as though you'd somehow heard of the advances made by the humans on Earth.

Civ 2 was released into the public domain. The version in the first post is about 18 kb zipped up and is stripped down. A superior 60 kb version including about 20 scenarios is found on the internet archive. Look for Civ 2 gold download. The full version is less then a CD's worth so 600 mbs. Quite a difference.

So, there is no music but with multitasking you can stream whatever music and play Civ 2 again..even on a tablet.

Ahh yes... The PS1 version - the best civilization ever. Illustrated beige FOW instead of black. #Nostalgia
