this is a hard thing to discuss, I think, seeing as how FIRAXIS is trying to creat a 'totally new' civ based on the simple engine. But is there any particular part of Civ 2 that you think must be kept in despite sweeping changes? For me, it would probably be the nice, 'happy' graphics that are colorful and bright. I hope they keep the city screen as it is, as it is very simple to use.

That is a very difficult thing to decide. I don't think that Firaxis is really starting on a totally new game. In fact, that would be just plain stupid. Instead of trying to just build an all new one, they should just be trying to expand upon the premise of civ 2 -just like civ 2 did with civ 1.

But what I would like to see stay the same is research and all the simple things that make the game run so smoothly (like the city screen as you mentioned). Everything else (diplomacy, combat, and trade) should be expanded, but the basics of the game (the tiles, the general characteristics of terrain, the user screens, units) should stay the same with only graphic improvements.

I'd like them to keep it simple, visually. I'm really worried about all this animated-units tlak (oops--my Zulu spelling is showing through

). But really, what's the point of animating the units? In a turn-based game, what are they going to do? March on the spot?

I would like to keep the terrain and how it works with two possible exceptions:

Coastlines see thread in other civIII forum
Navigable Rivers.

We would obviously want better graphics of course.

At this stage I have complete faith in Firaxis and Sid Meier.

I don't feel that it will be a bad game in any way, even if it is unrecognisable to certain extents.

I believe that all will be impressed, BIGTIME!

I think the most important thing to keep is the simplicity of the interface. Many of the suggestions that have come up have been defended by "well, they can make it an option to micromanage X". I think this adds too much confusion. They kept "simplified combat" as an option in civ2 and nobody uses it. It's just clutter.

If something is potentially confusing or too much micromanagement, it should not be part of the game.
