I'm just curious to know what other people think a "unit" should represent. Should it be a division, brigade, regiment, battalion, company...etc.?

Welcome to CFC Lightweight. I suppose the unit's rank could determine its size. Each hitpoint could represent a certain number of troops.

a unit could represent whatever you want it too, i would prefer a regiment

a group of 10 or 100 or 1000 troops :)

A self-contained military formation capable of self-command and operation. ;) Size to be appropriate for the age.

"A regiment is a group of troops commanded by a colonel. Or sometimes by a captain. Could be a sergeant too. At full strength it consists of enough troops. A regiment is always at full strength at the HQ, always understrength in the field. If the colonel commanding the regiment is promoted to a lieutenant general his regiment gets referred to as brigade." :)

i was thinking every land unit repsernts a divison, ever sea and air unit repersents a squadrean. and a artilery unit repersents a brigade. and army is made up of 3-5 divisons, and a corp made up of 3-4 armys is out i set up my units hears a charti made just now

1 unit=divison or squaderan
3-5divisons or squadrens = army,fleet ect.
3-4armys= a corp

Quite possible on land units, impossible on some of the larger naval units. A carrier is *ONE* carrier, not a fleet of them ; a battleship is *ONE* battleship. Now, transports probably represent a group of transports, and destroyer a small squadrong of them.

Also, the size of units probably depend on the type of unit and level of organization. A single warrior probably represent a losely grouped war party ; only with spearman and horsemen do we start to see more organized military forces.

Well, Lightweight, I guess by now you know the answer to your question. "Yes, it should be a division, brigade, regiment, battalion, company...etc." Whatever seems right to you.
Welcome to CFC.

In my mind, I think they represent different numbers at different ages. In the ancient era, I would think that a unit would be comprised of a lot more men than say, a modern MA unit.

When it comes to modern units, I tend to think of the land units as representing divisions. As Oda Nobunaga said, seeing a Battleship or Carrier unit as representing multiple Battleships/Carriers gets ridiculuous, but presumably the unit includes some support craft, like tankers.

For earlier units, I tend to think of them as whatever contemporary formations representing a few thousand men. Each Legionary would represent a legion, for instance. Earlier ships presumably represent small flotillas.

Along the same topic (or thereabouts), thoughts on city population? Does a size 12 city contain 12,000 120,000 1.2 million? Does it say in the manual...I never read manuals.

I'd say about 3000 or so men for a regular class unit, 4000 for a veteran etc., etc.

OK here we go :) As far as the ancient ages go, I really don’t know. I’m not into ancient wars, so I don’t know how many men really fought in those battles. By the time you get to Riflemen and Cavalries I think that each unit represents a brigade and each H.P. represents a battalion.

A Battalion will USUALLY be about 2,000 to 2,500 men with a battalion representing 500 men.

HOWEVER, it is not unusual to see a 900 man battalion, or a 5,000 man brigade, or a 20,000 man division, DURING WAR TIME.

For modern units like Tanks, MA, MI, etc… I think they represent a Company. For Tanks that would be about 10-15 Tanks, or around 110 men.

Fighter and Bombers represent squads, which are 10 - 20 planes.

Units that represent only 1 of a kind I think are; Ironclads, Destroyers, Submarines, Battleships, Carriers, AEGIS, Stealth Fighters and Stealth Bombers. Also the nukes, but I guess you all knew that.

Anyway don’t forget that each unit has a bunch of extras who are in the “rear with the gear.”

These numbers are based upon the US military and the UK Royal Air Force.

fool! a carier repersnts a squadrean. its a few cariers and the cariers escorts ect.. not the carier alon!!!!! a air unit is just one air craft. a single spear unit sint just 100 can u see 100 spear men defending a city??? LOL!
