What to build on bases far, far away?

None of the other civs had extra saltpeter to trade (seems every civ has ONE link to it). I had none. So, I planted a base on a tiny island FAR FAR away .. in another galaxy pretty much. Built a harbor, a road to the salt peter (2 salt resources, woo hoo!) the tiny land mass had etc.

Question is, what's the best (first priority) facilities to build on a base (actually, have 3 bases now on that island) that is far, far away? I built a factory on one of the bases (that cost a pretty penny to hurry up) and still it is taking like 70 turns to build like a Chalvary. I sure hate to lose that small island when war breaks out, the other civs could wipe it out in a heartbeat.. need more production! :crazyeyes

Thanks,
Jay

Usually I let it build a temple or a library, just to get a better border, since it must build something anyway, even if it takes 60 turns. Maybe a wall. I bring defenders instead of letting it build one.
If the resource is really important, I may put down a coastal fortress and a sam site as well many defenders and attackers.
Also, it's better to build over the resource and save the time of building a road.
Airports are better than harbours, if you can afford them.

library/temple .. of course. Cheap to hurry up too.

I know it's useless to do a factory. :)

Never really thought about importing units from my main land, duh (I'm so lazy). I got that baby secure now.

Thanks for da tips
