Lets see IV before we decide. If I had to guess it will be as II was after III.

I imagine Civ 3 will wind up a lot like Civ 2, but I think Civ 2 will always be remembered as more of a classic than Civ 3. I'm hoping that Civ 3 will be seen as more of a transition between Civ 2 and Civ 4 and that Civ 4 will be far superior.

The slow down's already been happening for months now. Posts from the previous 24 hours are starting to show up on the page. In a year, those posts will probably be 1/2 to 1/4 the way down. In 2 years, probably the first handful would be recent posts, like the Civ2 forum. In 10 years, only the first post would be lucky enough to be within a week like the Civ1 forum.

That's just the way forums go.

I think that some people will still play it (obviously ;) ). But these forums are going to be a little slower than they are now, after Civ IV is released.

But with time, like CT said, they will slow down more and more.

Of course people will still play it. I think it will be slightly larger than the Civ II players in the Civ III era.

i sure hope so for the sake of those who wont be able to afford Civ4. (prob including me)

I'm sure that, no matter the actual quality of Civ 4, there will be a contingent of players who'll say "it stinks!" and refuse to play it on that account. A few more will be turned off by the inevitable bugs. A further contingent will be perfectly content with Civ3 and just not feel like learning a new game. Yet more will lack the money, the system performance, or some other factor to be able to play Civ 4.

So I think Civ 3 will be around for a good while yet.

I'll probably play both for a while, even if the inevitable confusions will be sure to get me yelled at in SGs. :D

I have more levels and more variants to play before I put away my C3 discs :)

And I'll wait for patch #2 or 3 before I play C4 ;)

My feelings exactly. I expect that in its first year, Civ 4 will be a pretty shaky game. I won't be spending my money until there's a halfway decent product out there. I held out on Civ3 until PTW came out and from what I read here, that was a good thing.

If Civ4 is any good, Civ3 will likely fade even faster than Civ2. Why? CDs. I hate hunting around for my Civ3 CDs now. Civ2 takes up very little space, loads fast and needs no CDs. I have Civ2 TOT but I never play it, even though it is a superior product to plain Civ2. I can't be bothered with looking for the CD.

Hear hear! I think people will continue to play CivIII. It's great, no reason not to if you don't want to go to CivIV. Personally, I'm planning on taking the leap, but will keep my copy of CivIII on the puter just in case...

When I saw screenshots of Civ4, my first impression wasn't good. But, that was just a first impression. I'll bet it will be better than it looks.

I had the same reaction when I saw the screenshots. I'm hoping to see something new sometime soon so I can see how it's evolving.

I'll be playing Civ3 until least mid 2006, just to let the various problems get sorted out, people to develop and refine strats etc. Oh, and to see if I need a new computer or not.

Some people will prefer Civ3 (as some still prefer Civ2). Plus there are still a lot of older systems out there that won't run C4 (like mine, which won't even run C3C :( .) I agree that the Civ2 community will probably be larger than the Civ3 world after 4 has been out for a couple years.
I will probably buy Civ4 when I have a computer that will run it well AND I can buy a fully patched version off-the-shelf. Probably in 2007 or so.

Some poeple will continue to play. But not a lot. Compare GOTM civ2 to GOTM civ3.
It is like 16 and 120

Some folks will still play Civ III, just like some folks still play CivII. IMHO, more will continue to play Civ III, because Civ IV looks like a more radical change in game play that might push away some of the Civ-audience, at least from exclusive Civ IV play. Plus, I think Civ III is more inherently endearing than Civ II.

Personally, I'll be in business school when Civ IV comes out, so I won't notice the waiting until Civ IV Gold/Complete/whatever comes out to give us the final game.

Ill be one that sticks with civ 3 due to money and system performance

I just got a Windows PC, so I've yet to experience PTW or Conquests... so I've still got a bit of Civ 3 playing planned for the future! Still, if Civ 4 rocks, I can definately foresee my ol' Civ3 game collecting a little dust on the shelf. We'll see!
