What's linking the mesh with the texture?

Anyone know this? I thought the GR2-file just went by the name of the texture it was created with in the current folder. I've done a test replacing the texture in my ModBuddy-project with one with the same name and re-building and it gets updated. However just now I spent some time making a copy of my civilization with all it's units, with unique FXSML-files (just changed the name) in folders with the different textures with the same name. Then when I start the game both civilizations have all the units with the same texture.

EDIT: Somewhat solution. I can change name of the textures and unit-keys, then for good measure change name of the GR2 mesh-file before I export with the IndieStone-exporter to my Modbuddy-project. Then it loads as a new unit with new textures. If the texture would have the same name it just loads the old so evidently the GR2-file goes by the name but from some virtual root when the ModBuddy have built the project.
