I am not exactly a newbie, but I am not much above that.

What is the best civ for newbies to play ?

And what is the best victory road for them to pursue?

stwils:)

it really depends on how you want to play, but i suggest greece, egypt and babylonia...

Indeed, you shld choose one which best fits your present playing style. E.g. if you like war, go for a militaristic one.

If you're a culture-y person, I'd go with the Babylonians. They can produce religious things quickly (temple) and they are excellent at research because of their research trait. I'm not a warring type at all, though.

If you really want a good UU, and you're a warmonger, I'd suggest Persia. Just get three or four immortals, and a catapult and go on a city-taking spree. :satan:

Catapults never seem to work for me. I attacked a city with 10-15 catapults once, and only 2 worked, knocking off a meesly 1 HP each.

I like the Babs, but if you are having military problems in the middle game, a civ like China or Japan could be very good too (like them anyway).

I have also had little luck with catapults. Is their success dependent on the chosen civ in any way (e.g.: more likely to succeed with military civ). I one had one catapult fire about 10 misses in an attack. But strangely, it hit both times when defending. Is that the way it's supposed to be?

As a general principle, I think newbies would benefit most from traits that help them as much as possible in the early stages of the game.

The no-brainer is industrial, since the doubled worker-rate helps you a lot in the start of the game.

My second vote goes to religious, since fast temple-building is a great help early - both to have a significant culture base, but mostly to get the bigger city radius. Being able to change government in one turn is also important for newbies who probably haven't figured out the pros and cons of the different governments yet.

So my conclusion is that Egypt is the best civ for newbies.

If you like war, choose germany, the free tech at each new era will help out your tech and of course they are militaristic(also playing them leaves a 0% chance of being in the game as the AI)

Of course if you like culture babylon is a great choice. If you want to get a good early boost try america. The expansionist trait will help you scout out your territory quicker and the industrious trait will help you improve your territory quicker leading to faster roads, a better infastructure, more food, and more production. Unfortunately, babylon and germany both have UUs that are better than america's. Although, you can find some uses for the F-15.

Giving jet fighters/F-15s lethal bombardment increases their uses and helps out the American UU immensely. They can now trigger a golden age with their UU without having to rely an enemy bomber being shot down. :)

Definitely Egypt - quick workers and cheap temples allow you easily to get a good start, and to make mistakes without it being too costly.

heheh funny.

Anyone ever actually not have a GA with the Americans until the modern era? I have not, wonders always gave them to me. I should try it, the benefits of a GA in the modern era would be phat!

People overrate religious and scientific civilizations. What do you get out of religon? Faster building of happiness improvements and no anarchy? That sucks, well atleast the no anarchy part, because in effect you can and it is possible to get out of anarachy in 2 turns or less even when you're not a religious civilization.

Scientific? Wow, you get an extra advance every turn. That's bad, you're turn overrate should be at 6 turns most anyways, so scienific is not worth it.

Militaristic? If you're a war monger and want an extra 1 hp on you're unit, go have a ball and choose this. Besides some other miniscule things this offers, it's nothing big.

Commerical and Industrial are the best. Commercial raises your revenue and in effect, you can pump out your science rate. Industrial makes your workers work fast, that's good when you need to build a lot of infrastruture in the beginning of the game.

I would have to recommend that you play the Persians if you're a newbie at Civilization III.

I'd like to see that - on Regent, 4 turns at least, and the AI tends to attack you then - very annoying for noobs!

cheaper Libraries mean a lot faster research AND more culture - so do not discount scientific until you understand the gmae a little better!

Dead wrong! There is no extra HP, but faster promotion, thus higher chances for getting elites - more leaders. And leaders can be VERY HELPFULL - especially for noobs. Also, cheaper barracks give you a headstart for conquests.

very good, but you need to know what you do with your workers, and you need to know how to grow your towns fast while expanding which isn't so easy for noobs.....

good call on the choice for a different reason - the IMMORTALS ROCK!!!!! With that UU, a newbie can get to Industrial times and be relatively safe from the AIs.

When I say you get an extra 1 hp, I mean promotion is faster.

BTW, if you're entering anarchy and don't already have 300 units to wipe the AI out then you deserve to be attacked.

Japanese is good. Cheap happiness fast promotion and A stong UU Samarais Rock. Fast as a knight without the horses.

IMHO Egypt would be great.

You get faster workers to figure things out. You can change governemts and not wonder why it is taking so long to do anything and you'll get your Goldenage quicker (Chariots) if you go to war early on. Don't expect to win though on your first try. :)

I think a lot of the other civs require a little bit of knowledge to use effectivle before you play. (ex In order to use the German Panzers you have to get to the late industrial. To use the War elephant you need to get out of the ancient era.)
