I am totally confused about what I need to do to start trading with other civs in my game .

Since there are no more caravans, do I just need to connect a road to a city of the other civilization and then trading automagically starts up between my civilization and theirs or ???

Also, unrelated question. I set up several colonies to exploit mineral resources. When first founded, it created a graphic image over the resource - some kind of hut like thing. I noticed that later the graphic disappeared . Does that have any significance.

Thanks in advance

To trade resources with another civ you must have a road or sea route to their capital. Any city will not do. Also, you must establish an embassy to engage in any real diplomacy.

When a city radius encompasses your colony it disappears because it is no longer necessary.

To trade you need access to the AIs capitol.
This can happen as roads to the AIs cities which in turn are connected to the same AI's capitol, or harbours built and connected to the AIs harbours which in turn are connected to teh same AIs capitol.

Then you need to initiate diplomatic talks.

You'll see resources and luxuries as options to trade. You can see if they even have resources or luxuries before you make the road/harbour connection the options are just not available.

Hope that helps.

As to the question about colonies, I'm not sure if you are talking about when a colony gets absorbed by a culture boundary or not.

-Sorry for the double post, I spent over 20 minutes typing it and working at the same time. :)
