Okay, whats up with this?

So I started the game, randomized civ, I end up as the Greeks, Warlord diffuculty setting, on the more aggressive (not most aggressive) setting. All I have a chance to build is a warrior, which I send out exploring, and a hoplite, which I also send out exploring. I have a horrible starting position, so I need to find a place to settle.

So, suddenly, Russia walks up to me, 3300 BC, and takes my capital which is undefended. They had no observable reason to do this, and since its 3300 BC, I haven't had a chance to build another city yet (I was building a settler though).

What aggravation would they have to do this? I've never seen that happen before, and it was only on Warlord on the more aggressive aggression setting on Conquests. WTH?

Ya, and, how do you post a screenshot. I got it into microsoft word but it wont let me paste it onto here, either from microsoft word or directly from the game.

You're playing more aggressive, right? That's probably part of it. I don't remember how aggressive Russia is, but I'm think they are the notch under 'most' aggressive. And having an undefended city just sitting there is asking for them to take it.

Well, first off, I've been near more aggressive civs than Russia, and I always use that strategy, and I always play on those settings and it's never happened before. Here's the screenshot:

Well you'd have to be crazy to not knock out an unguarded AI capital city that early. :p

It probably has to due just with an aggressive civ on a higher aggressiveness rating.

That's not that bad a starting position. Two luxuries close by, a cluster of cows, a river in the plains, and those oases are as good as bonus grassland. Plonk a city down by those cows and get it churning out settlers and you'd be fine. Shame about the Russians, but hey, who wouldn't do the same in their situation?

Did you have elimination mode on? The AI loves undefended cities there. I also had a few AI (who got 3 warriors from goody huts) warrior rush me. (once was as the Greeks... early Golden Age. :/)

The AI was not designed to win, but to stop others from winning.

The other way around. ;)
The AI doesn't take care if you're winning, it tries to grow big itself. And it would be completely stupid to not take the chance to capture an undefended city with border expansion...
If you do a Farmer's gambit, you never may allow a AI unit next to your cities.

At least it was quick! Grab your 4000 BC autosave, and try again - it could be educational.

Lesson #1 - never leave your capital undefended.

But I always use that exact same strategy, on the exact same settings. I'm positive that Russia doesn't have a very high aggression rating, and I've been next to more aggressive civs than that (once it was the Iriquois...that game was disastrous early on). It just doesn't make sense that it's never happened to me before on those same settings.

At least have a warrior. Pkus, Hoplites aren't good for anything excpept defending.

I've had that happen once or twice. At least you didn't put a lot of time into the game.

As the Sumerians in an Emperor level game on normal aggressiveness, I got jumped by 2 Hittite warriors before the first culture expansion on turn 10. That's when I learned to love/respect the Enkidu warrior. I not only survived, but somehow managed to win that game.

Any combat unit is good for barbarian hunting/exploring, at least on those lower levels.

Well, I guess I'll learn to keep my capital defended at all times from now on. :)

man the russians did that to me just today playing new game and they brought a stack of units that were on the verge of my border and then decared war on me and captured my city that was defended by a warrior.

That is one of the reasons for the RNG, so that you don't use the same strategy all the time. Sometimes the AI just gets the right RNG roll, and they will come calling. You have to prepare to a certain extent without going over the top with defence, I generally like to have at least one warrior within a couple of turns of the capital in the early stages, or at one close to being built.

I always thought that the Zulu, Germans, and Russians were the MOST aggressive civs, so it doesn't surprise me that Russia took your undefended capitol. Next time at least leave a warrior in there,
