I am just playing the Imperialism map again. I downloaded it from the official Civ3 site ages ago and I'm enjoying it immensely. There's that initial conflict with the other civs to get established, followed by a whole new level of exploration and colonisation of the New World. There are hordes of Barbarians and lots of new resources to feed one's voracious, imperialistic culture-factory.

So, any other favourites and recommendations?

Okay, I'm gonna go get it now.

Got it!

Sid, I'm playing as the Germans since its a tech race to navigation and a battle over resources (and barbs). Which civ do you play on this map?

I've never even downloaded any of these. Any trick to it with a Mac? Are they just maps, or scenarios?

Well, IIRC, you load the ".bic" file into the scenarios folder, whether it's map or not. It may or may not change the default rules - though if it does, it'll tell you when you load it in (if the hopefully accompanying readme hasn't already).
:)
The cool thing is that maps and scenarios alike can play cross-platform, just as long as it's written for a version no later than what you're playing. Assuming you're playing 1.21g, you can play all maps/scenarios up to 1.21g, but you're SOL for any designed with PC v1.29 (which is a bummer since I remember reading 1.29 has some pretty groovy new angles to game play :( ).

dojoboy: I have been the English and Japanese, I think. I love the map because the late-game resources are all in the various 'New worlds', heavily defended by Barbarians. The map really replicates the feel of the old 'Imperialism' game and maybe even The Respected Sid's (Meier) 'Colonisation'.

Depending how the patches/MacEditor/PTW goes, I'll post some other maps on my iTools site as soon as I can afford to pay Apple their new fee.

I played it at Warlord the first time; need to play again at Regent. The barbarians are relentless, but they are easily defeated w/ the right units. I settled the new world far sooner than the other civs; therefore, I never was w/out strategic resources. I would alter the map int two ways:

(1) iron (& maybe saltpeter) only strategic resource available on home continents --- would make the new world even more important.

(2) change the default barbarian units to swordsmen & knights

dojoboy: those are great ideas!

When I get an Editor [!] I will have a couple of versions: i) one involving just european civs; ii) another with eastern civs. I'd certainly add those ideas of yours.

ok I just downloaded a bunch of maps and scenarios and I can't for the life of me get anything other than, could not open the .bic, the file may be corrupt, message What am i doing wrong. I've tried maps (which I also can't figure out because there is a maps folder but how do you access them?) then also scenarios with .bics but hose dont work either. the only thing that kinda works are .sav but even a bunch of those don't work. Is it all version skew? I purposely downloaded older files that were posted more than a month or 2 ago to avoid 1.29 items. anyhow, let me know. thanks a lot.

Did you put downloaded maps in the scenario folder?
If you downloaded from civ3.com, they should work.
