Steam usually downloads updates automatically.

If not, right click on Civ5 in your steam library, go to properties -> updates and choose "always keep this game up to date".
If steam still doesn't download the patch, it might be set to "offline mode". In the top left, click on "Steam" and then "go online".

Most likely, your game is already patched but you haven't noticed it.

If you have the Mac Appstore version, then via the Appstore, else not.
