Where to Build Those Guilds?

Hey guys,

I have this problem in some of my games. Not sure where to build my guilds. I often want to build them in my capital since I know it will be my safest city. However theres the problem of food and growth. Once I get up writers and artists - the city slows to a halt with regard to population growth. If its a coastal capital then great - I will just send it a sea trade route which can get food. But a caravan bringing 4 food a turn does almost nothing for it.

What do u guys do about this?

Also I guess theres some credit to doing "manual specialist control" and to just not work the guilds - but then y build them in first place?

It depends on the situation; if you're in a situation where your capital has very high population growth it might be better to build 2 or all of them there. I'm presuming your national epic (+50% GP) and other GP boosting stuff is placed in your capital (Leaning Tower). There are a total of 3 buildings and 3 slots; 9 population. They'll be most effective in your capital, but if your capital isn't growing quickly it'd be best to not place them ALL there. Writers guild should always go in your capital, then when you get to artist guild check your size. If you're size 12, then of course you can't use half your pop on guilds. If you're at say size 15 and growing quickly, I would add it in there.

Adding your musicians guild on top of all that is relatively rare; coastal city with good food can handle it. Otherwise place it in your next best city.

You can sell the Guilds later if you get a better city to put them in and they are cheap to build so it will not hurt to much.

Generally it's more efficient to build them all in one city

You usually want to build them in the same city as National Epic, because that maximises your return from it (it boosts 3 separate GP bars, plus the GS/GE/GM bar if you have any specialists/Wonders of those types). This will generally be the capital if you have Wonders there that generate useful GP points, but it doesn't have to be.

Food trade does scale over the game, although slowly, and sea trade routes are the best to use for it where possible. Hanging Gardens can support three of the Guild specialists, and comes with a free Garden that also boosts GP output. This can be an important reason to put the Guilds in the capital, since it's unlikely any of your other cities will be able to build HG before an AI gets it.

Also, you don't have to build and fill Guild slots all at once - it's ideal if you can, because artist specialists produce a lot of culture, but early in the game you aren't going to have any Great Artist slots except the Palace, so if you can't support 6 artists, just assign 1 to the Artists' Guild or move the artists to the Musicians' Guild when that comes online.

I prefer to build them in three separate cities (ones with access to gardens, preferably). That way it's less Specialists required by that city early allowing me to concentrate more on growth while still generating the GA/M/W.

Building them in one city is an option, but spreading them is my preferred method.

I always spread them out to my three gems. I tend not to have enough population in my capital to support all of them when they become available because I've unwittingly hobbled its growth to keep production high and feed my irrational lust for wonders.

Obviously, putting them on fresh water cities so you can build gardens is helpful.

Myself, all in the same city (capital) and run food cargo ships.

It's best to build them in Capital or city with highest food titles. It's a good idea to build them all in same city then build National Epic.

You can sacrifice one or two trade routes to send food to that city. Yeah, GPT will be lower, but that won't hurt that much unless you're stuck in -gpt. ;)

If you have only coastal cities, you can send two food trade routes and your capital will grow insanely in a short amount of time. ;)

Also its very good idea to get % Culture modifiers in the city you Place your Guilds in.
The best thing is if the same city can both get all Great Works Wonders and support your Guilds.

Placing the guilds requires a city that has a lot of food. One doesn't always have to place the guilds in the capital because the capital usually has more food.

Problem is, there's only one National Epic.

This too. There's also only one Hermitage and only one Alhambra.

Never been an issue for me. I usually place the National Epic in a city that can't get a garden to replace that effect anyway instead of stacking it with a garden.

Yes, I know effects stack, but spreading it out is also an option for me since I don't play Deity/Immortal I don't need to play a specific way every time just to overcome AI advantages.
