c) Acer Aspire 5920G (H)

I'm clueless about these sorts of things so i just thought i'd see what people thought was the best before parting with my hard earned cash.

The Toshiba has a bigger screen, with a better resolution.

The Sony is about 7% faster than the Toshiba, and the Acer is about 11% faster.

The Sony only has half as much ram as the other two, this alone would rule out the Sony for me.

Checking specs, the Acer looks to have a better video card, so would be better for games, also 50gb more HDD space than the Toshiba.

Personally, it would depend why I was getting the laptop. The Acer is going to be a tad faster, particularly for games, but the Toshiba is going to be more usable for general work, with a bigger screen and larger resolution.

Will the laptop mostly be stationary or will you carry it around/keep it with you often?

The laptop should not be too heavy if you plan to keep it with you. Also, laptops with monitors of ~15'' will have more options for carrybags and be easier to transport.

Out of those the Sony one is the lightest with ~2.7 kg weight and 15.4'' monitor. The Acer is ~3.0 kg and a 15.4'' monitor. And the Toshiba is ~3.3 kg with a 17.1'' monitor.

Despite the difference not seeming too much, the weight and monitor size actually do make a difference.

It depends on what you want to do with it. Don't expect to play new games at high framerates, but these are decent specs. 2GB RAM is good, don't waste your money on 4, 1 might be a little low. The larger screen will drain the battery faster, so if you're going to be lugging it around the small screen is better. I have a 14.1 myself, it's plenty. I also can't recommend an Acer, no matter the specs, they're just not built well in my experience.

It will be stationary for the most part, wont move it around too much.

As for games, Civilisation is about as advanced as i'm likely to play, its more for just general work, processing etc, and surfing the net.

It's a decision between the Toshiba with the larger screen and the Acer which is faster, more portable (and stylish IMO) and generally better at playing games. I find my 15.4" notebook is a great size, and I'm always carrying it around, so I'd probably go for the Acer.

However, since Civilization is about as advanced as you are going to get, the Toshiba is certainly an option. It's just a matter of preference really.

My mother has a 17" Toshiba, almost the same machine you posted here. It is a good computer, but I almost don't see the difference with a desktop. It would only be useful if you planned to move it only like once a month or so, it is bulky (it even has a numeric keypad) and heavy.

I have a 15" Toshiba myself and I take it to work everyday. I find myself leaving it on the car most days when I go back home as it is already quite heavy. I need a 15" screen at least however, because I use a lot of excel sheets and a smaller screen would be uncomfortable.

So as almost everybody said before, it depends on how much are you going to move it. As a rule of thumb if you are going to take it away periodically (and I mean by this more than once a week) I would recommend the Acer. If it is going to be less than than you should evaluate the desktop option. I would only recommend 17" if you plan to move it only once in a while.
