Hi there all

I've viewed the change log for v1.20 patch, all the changes appear good however there is one which confuses me.

* Radio Tech removed

What will this mean for playing Conquests, where will its current benefits go?

Thanks all

The radar tower now appears with advance flight, the civil defense improvement goes with mass production (i believe), but I like this change as I thought radio was a pretty lame advance.

I disagree. Perhaps in Civ3 radio is lame; but in the real world Radio was an awsome advance. ;) Consider, as late as 1900 (or whenever they laid that first Atlantic cable) the fastest communication between New York and Paris was by letter. Now if you want to chat with someone in Paris you just pick up the phone. Radio makes that possible. :) There's more to it than that; but radio is one of the foundations of long distance communication. Think where we would be without the microwave towers and Satellites.

Radio GONE!!! How are we going to listen to music...I htough radio was a good tech...now its gone..at least the rdar tower is going to be there....

To answer your question:

"Video killed the Radio Star" ! - catchy opening theme of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

I actually do not think this was a bad thing...

ADVANCED FLIGHT - now got the advantages of Radio Tech.

Who really bothered researching Advanced Flight before for the SUPERLAME paratroopers?

But I wonder why they did this and not take more care of the obviously really "submarine-breaking" ;) sub bug???

Yes, Video killed the radio star is a song from 1980. It was a "one hit wonder" from The Buggles. It was one of the 10 or so songs that made MTV such a huge success, back when MTV played music videos and was worth listening to. Now it's basically a talk show for pre-teens or a place for "musicians" to grab their crotch and degrade women...or women to degrade themselves. But I digress. Anybody even seen the video? Classic!

Maybe.... or maybe that was some time when there was one of those ads on tv where they're selling those cds.... you know, the best of the 80s and stuff.

All I seem to remember is this guy, or these two guys, outside, with sunglasses on, and lots of hair.

But that might have been something else....

Right now "Radio" is being simulated by "Electronics". If the Radio isn't an electronixadon, then what does electronics mean?

Hmm..
to make advanced flight worth something, I changed it so that aircraft carriers and bombers become available there.

What? Telegraph predated radio and allowed fast communication around the globe. (Across oceans as well, via cables).

And telephones don't work through radio, either.

Without radio, inside tanks
Soldier-1 : " Call general right now, we have to attack now before there bombers attack us"
Soldier-2 (after dialing some number) : "Operator, could you tell me what General Tank phone number is ? "
Soldier-1 : "Who do you call ? "
Soldier-2 : "Sorry captain, I forget General Tank phone number"

:D :D
IMHO, radio is important.

I said before the first Atlantic cable and I belive radio telegraph predated the cable. Did they ever get around to laying one across the Pacific?

You are telling me there are NO SATELLITE PHONES ? What do you think makes a Sat Phone work? Magic?

Transatlantic radio didn't exist until 1907. But as Intendant pointed out, translatlantic telegraph predated that almost 50 years. In 1870 submarine telegraph line was laid between england and India. I'm pretty sure there was line laid to australia as well, eventually.

Sure there are satellite phones, but they seem pretty poorly received. Motorola was threatening to deorbit the entire Iridium system until the State department decided to buy/lease it. I guess they have their niche uses.

I'm not saying radio isn't a huge technology. I'm just saying telegraph (and the internet, which is really quite similar and analagous) are probably more important.

You just answered your own question.. they did it to force us to research Advanced Flight. Plain and simple. In other games known as a 'nerf'.
