Why do Airports not boost Tourism?

You'd think the ability for citizens from faraway lands to fly directly to your major cities in a matter of hours would boost your Tourism, but this is inexplicably not the case. It's quite the shift in gears to go from Civ5's Cultural Victory - where Airports were integral - to Civ6's, where they're not important for...anything, really.

There is still room for a third buildings in the aerodrome that could boost tourism. Would be nice if the boost would be related to wonders and great works in a radius around the aerodrome.
For example: +3 tourism from wonders, +1 tourism from great works and +1 tourism from seaside resorts in a radius of 6 hexes around the aerodrome.

You could bring back the hotel from civ5 for this, although a little weird to only be able to build a hotel in the airport.

Flight (the tech) boosts tourism in some regarfs, so maybe they thought that enough.

In general, they removed a lot of the 'active' late-game boosts to the cultural victory from civ 5 (having to build hotels/airports/visitor center, internet being an out of the way/dead-end tech, etc) So except for policy cards, most late game boosts are just built into techs you'd be going for anyway. I think it's why so many people accidentally end up with cultural victories when going for science victory.

they didn't get around to it. Like us players, they started developing the game, and sometimes in the Renaissance era, they run out of time so they had to quickly fill the later ages. Maybe they'll get around to it in a later DLC... [/sarcasm off]

Lol. The cynic in me would believe that.

In what way did the computer really boost tourism? I would say what really boosted modern day tourism was
a. cheaper flights
b. the internet

Firaxis decided that it couldn't be so obvious and hence decided computers = tourism

I actually don't care about tourism because I don't turn on the Cultural Victory. This victory type isn't how I want to play the game, which means any game mechanic or construction option that has something to do with tourism (and nothing much else) is completely useless to me.

What I do want is for tourism to have an impact on the empire other than being simply a numerical counter to a victory type I'm not interested in.

I concur. However, the same applies for scientific victory and the spam victory called religious victory.

That leaves me with domination and thanks to the movement rules, the lack of unit variety, the complete absence of AI and 1upt, I have given up playing that as well. Which means, Civ 6 is dead for me.

Yep, I pretty much just play domination (anything else will just cause the game to prematurely and unceremoniously end with a loss or victory in the middle of me doing or planning something, which is always a big let down, even if I unexpectedly won).

However, at least science, culture and religion actually do have game mechanics that are more than just a counter to a victory condition, so they are still worth pursuing even if the victory condition is turned off.

I think the seaside resort kind of replaces the civ 5 hotel.
To get back to my suggestion with a third building in the aerodrome district: it could be called international airport or commercial aviation terminal. The buildings before are more or less militaristic, so a third one regarding civilian transportation/tourism would make sense to me.

One thing I would like is to make a new Airbase building for the Aerodrome that would be mutually exclusive with the Airport. I would then dump all of the military benefits the Airport currently has into that. (I might bump the Airbase's unit capacity to 3 and reduce the Airport's to 1. I would also probably let Airports still have an airlift ability). So rather than the Airport just getting a nice little bonus to Tourism, the Airport would actually be mainly a Tourism and Commercial building. I like the idea of the Airport augmenting the Tourism of existing attractions around the city rather than providing a flat Tourism boost.

I don't know if there's room in the Aerodrome for a third building, but perhaps a Hotel could be added to boost the tourism output of the parent city. Such a change would actually incentivize players who don't need or want to build air units to build an otherwise worthless district.
