Why do games reload so slowly on my XP?

I upgraded my computer from windows 98 to XP. Now if I try to reload any of the saved games while in an active game. it takes a few minutes. Obviously it is an XP issue rather than a game thing. It isn't like 98 where I could just control alt delete and drop all but the bare essentials out with the task manager. Any ideas?
