why two configuration files?

Im wondering why i have two different configuration files in mygames/civ4/ folder. One is called CivilizationIV and is a configurationfile, the other is called CivilizationIV.ini and is a BAK-file. Its no big deal im just wondering why and wich one i shall use for editing.

does someone know?

CivilizationIV.ini.bak is a backup file type. The program creates this when you run the game. You will want to make edits CivilizationIV.ini if you need to.
You can also delete (or rename) them both if you want to start from scratch. The program will create fresh files if you run it and they aren't already there.
