i have a related question. i was wondering if civ v would work on a 2012 macbook pro running lion. i would like to purchase the game, but i don't want to waste my time/money.

these are the specs
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB

The last time somebody had a related question, the guys from Aspyre said that the Intel HD3000 was not supported, but they were working on a fix for that.
I assume the same counts for the 4000, but I'm not sure if it has been fixed.
I'll just move this to the Mac section, Alan or Ryan will know :).

I play with a 2011 Macbook Air, 4GB ram, 1.7Ghz i5, Intel HD 3000 graphics. The one that's not supported. It works, but is unbearably slow. So, I play in strategic mode only (no graphics, makes it look like a barebones boardgame), which I'm used to now.

You should get better mileage out of your superior system.

Just don't upgrade to Mountain Lion. Yet.

thanks. i just want to know. if i decide to drop money on this game i would go straight for the goty edition on steam.

I got the exact same mac as you early last month. it works fine, don't worry. The specs for the game say our card is not supported but that doesn't mean that it doesn't work.

I keep all the game settings on default anyway just to be sure. Almost everythign is set to low or minimum but it still looks pretty good. Just no animated leaders really, which is fine for me.
the only thing I turned up a bit was the water settings. The water looks really good. Enjoy!

you say it works fine - does that mean no lag or stutter?

also, can you play any type of map/number of players or are you limited?
