My husband brings home a new computer with Windows Vista. I've used XP, ME and 98 over the years of playing Civ games up through IV, Beyond the Sword, Warlords and more. I've had minor problems, easily fixed, but this is beyond my ability to figure out or fix.
So I'm trying to install IV so I can install the rest. I have two IV's, Gold and Chronicles. Gold gives me a data3.cab error, regardless of cleaning. IV from Chronicles pack did install, but gives me an warning that Vista and the game are incompatible. I tried loading to play anyway and the whole screen froze. I wasn't able to do anything but shut down.
So... I need advice. Is there a way to use Vista successfully for all my Civilization gaming or should I try to switch to XP?
Also... If I really needed data3.cab why does the game install with Chronicles, which only has data1 and 2.cab, while Gold will not and ALSO only has data1 and data2.cab?
IOW... I get an data3.cab error message that prevents me from installing Civ IV Gold, but not with Civ IV Chronicles.
Is Vista at the bottom of these problems? And would my life just be easier if I can switch to XP? If so... where and how do I get the info on how to do that?
