Wonders Tunes

Apollo,

You are half correct. We listened to EL Capitan the other night and should have
caught on then. The Beginning of Both Liberty bell and EL Capitan start out
nearly identical But we listened to the end of Bell and it is the end of
EL Capitan as you said that is the start of the SOL tune.
At the end of EL Capitan the SOL tune starts over/repeats and thus sounds much
like the Liberty bell march , but it is not, it is the beginning of EL Capitan.

We are convinced that the SOL tune is 100 percent El Capitan.

There is a MIDI of EL Capitan on this Link see if you concur.

EL Capitan - scroll down to Sousa's marches

Hi, I'm new here. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0> Sorry about jumping in like this, but I've been looking for this information for a long time now. I originally wanted the music for Copernicus' Observatory. I was going to use it in a project for school and I thought it was public domain. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/frown.gif" border=0> Ah, well, at least I know the inspiration for it now. I wrote to Microprose and they never answered me. I had people suggesting the music from "Cosmos" to me--but it didn't sound very much like Vangelis's work for that series. Thanks for the info! Now I can stop driving all my friends crazy...

The other thing I wanted to mention, though, is I played the Wonders movie music to a friend of mine who knows more about classical and jazz music than I do. He wasn't much help, unfortunately, but one thing he said to me was that he thought that Leonardo's Workshop sounded like a song called "Watermelon Man" by Herbie Hancock. I realize that "Cantaloop" by US3 was mentioned as the source for it, but when I checked out US3 on www.cdnow.com I noticed "Hancock" next to the song listing...I went researching and found this in the Acid Jazz Archive:

"Us3's "Cantalooop (Flip fantasia)" is a version (accelerated but more or less acurate) of the Herbie Hancock's classic "Cantaloupe Island", from the Blue Note album "Empyrean Isles"...

The original actually shows up on several albums, including "Cantaloupe Island" (naturally). So my friend had the artist right, but the song wrong--they both sound fairly similar, though.

I also got this from another website--here's the link first:
http://www.lowculture.com/soundproof/news/news_hancockoldnavy.html

and now the tidbit:

...Hancock's 1970 composition "Cantaloupe Island." This tune was also used in early acid-jazzsters US3’s early-nineties hit, "Cantaloop", where that trio sampled the primary melody as well (but, notably, with full legal clearance, due to their label’s willingness to compensate Hancock with all relevant royalties).

This seems to be a fairly well known fact, as I actually found the above information on several different sites. I did my search on a Mac, using Sherlock and the words "US3 cantaloop hancock", if anyone wants to duplicate it.

I think the trumpet solo is different, but can't be sure--I've never heard the original song all the way through.

So, now we all know the inspiration (kinda-sorta) for US3's "Cantaloop". <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0> I feel like a font of mildly interesting but otherwise useless information...<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0> But since I got such great information from this thread, I decided to put a little back into it. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

If anyone wonders why I'm doing this, (well, actually, I know you don't but I think I'll mention this anyway) I have an awful headache and can't sleep until it goes away. I'm trying not to think about it right now. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

Thanks again!

WOW the info that Smash obtained sure went a long way toward finishing the
project here. According to our count the following info is still needed.

Titles for the tunes that the following Wonder music was based on.

1. Hanging gardens - one of those Bamboo Flute compilations.

2. Michelangelo’s Chapel - Some baroque thing.

3. Darwin’s Voyage - something that causes insomnia

4. The Eiffel Tower - some accordion music.

The following just need some one to listen to the tracks and confirm accuracy.

5. Sun Tzu’s War Academy - inspired by Peter Gabriel's "Gethsemane",
from the Passion soundtrack. 21 tracks which one is SunTzu's ?

6. Copernicus’ Observatory - confirm if it is Laptua soundtrack Track 12 or "The Glade, Part II" from the Mohicans soundtrack.

7. United Nations -confirm that it is the main title to the
"Laputa : Castle in the Sky " soundtrack.

8. Hoover Dam - confirm which track on the Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack it is.

9. The Seti Program - confirm that it is inspired by a "Mechwarrior 2" track.

10. Cure for Cancer - Theme From "Harry's Game" Clannad track ???

P.S. Tears of the Moon,
Welcome to Civ Fanatics!! Always glad to see another Mac User.
Feel free to give some more back and answer any of the above questions. LOL

Amazing progress! We need to chase down the revised list that moof supplied, and tonight I will start verifying some of the loose ends that Smash supplied.

In my best Homer Simpson voice, Woohoo!

Vrylakas,

or anyone that reads this, we were wanting some opinions on the original post
at the top of this thread that we have been adding the info to as it comes in.
Does the colored typing help ?
Is the information understandable ?
Do we need to add/delete/change anything ?
Did we define Tim Train & Michael Ely's comments clearly enough?

Thanks to everyone for all the help. When we started on this we waded thru
the threads over at Apolyton that had the word music in them.
There were 6 or 8 threads over many months
with the wonder music topic.
There were never many replies and the extent of the info was no more than
what Smash & Vrylakas started with here.

In short, Great site Thunderfall.

Good job catching me on that moof
goodwork.gif
. The Statue of Liberty wonder music is 100% "El Capitan" by John Philip Sousa. It starts with the end of the piece, and then cycles back around to the beginning. I guess I should have listened to the songs I was talking about before I made claims about them, rather than try and remember back to my high school marching-band days.

Thanks Apollo but we consider it a team effort with you on SOL.

Since we are on Page two now , here is a copy of what we have so far.
At the end we have a list of information that is still needed to finish the
" Wonder Movie Music liner notes "

Smash obtained information via E-Mail from Tim Train & Michael Ely.
Tim Train & Michael Ely were credited for the Wonder movies in Civ.

Tim Train's comments have been added below in <FONT COLOR="purple">purple</FONT c> type as tribute to
"Last of the Mohicans". The Sioux are the closest to Mohicans that Civ has.
Michael Ely's comments are in <FONT COLOR="blue">blue</FONT c> type.
<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> indicates information needing confirmation or discovery
----------------------------------------------------------

<FONT COLOR="purple">"Most of the wonder movie music was inspired by certain pieces--
we actually mocked them up using the pieces as placeholder, and then
the music guys composed music that is "in the style of" that piece."</FONT c>

WONDER00.MOV -- Pyramids - <FONT COLOR="purple">inspired by Peter Gabriel's "The Feeling Begins"
from the Passion soundtrack.</FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER01.MOV -- Hanging Gardens - <FONT COLOR="purple">I can't quite remember the inspiration,
but I think it was from one of those Bamboo Flute compilations. Mike?</FONT c>
<FONT COLOR="blue">I don't remember what track was used for Hanging Gardens either;
I'll have to give it a listen.</FONT c>

WONDER02.MOV -- Colossus - <FONT COLOR="purple">Inspired by the "Main Title" from
" Last of the Mohicans " soundtrack</FONT c>

WONDER03.MOV -- Lighthouse - <FONT COLOR="purple"> Inspired by "Elk Hunt"
from " Last of the Mohicans " soundtrack</FONT c>

WONDER04.MOV -- Great Library - <FONT COLOR="purple">Inspired by "Sheeta's Decision" from the
" Laputa: Castle in the Sky " soundtrack.
Personal plug: Laputa: Castle in the Sky is one of my favorite movies, ever,
and has a phenomenal soundtrack. It was directed by Hayao Miyazaki,
who also did the more famous "Princess Mononoke". It's not currently available
in the US, but the rights are owned by Disney and I hope they eventually release it.</FONT c>

WONDER05.MOV -- Oracle - <FONT COLOR="purple">I'm surprised no one got the inspiration for this one:
"Theme From Harry's Game" by Clannad. :-).</FONT c>

WONDER06.MOV -- The Great Wall - <FONT COLOR="purple">Inspired by Peter Gabriel's "Gethsemane",
from the Passion soundtrack.</FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER07.MOV -- Sun Tzu’s War Academy - <FONT COLOR="purple">I'm pretty sure this is also
inspired by Gethsemane, but I'm not going to click
through all 21 tracks on that album to be sure :-)</FONT c>

WONDER08.MOV -- King Richard’s Crusade - <FONT COLOR="purple"> "Dance of the Furies" by Gluck,
from Orfeo. One of my fave classical pieces. Christopher Hogwood
and the Academy of Ancient Music do a killer version of this.</FONT c>

WONDER09.MOV -- Marco Polo’s Embassy - <FONT COLOR="purple">Inspired by "The Kiss", from
the " Last of the Mohicans " soundtrack.</FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER10.MOV -- Michelangelo’s Chapel - <FONT COLOR="purple">Some damn baroque thing.
Don't remember what or who.</FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER11.MOV -- Copernicus’ Observatory - <FONT COLOR="purple">I'm pretty sure this is inspired
by the Laptua soundtrack again--Track 12. It may also be inspired by
"The Glade, Part II" from the Mohicans soundtrack again.
We were pretty into the Mohican soundtrack on this project.</FONT c>

WONDER12.MOV -- Magellan’s Expedition - <FONT COLOR="purple"> Inspired by "Promentory" on Mohicans.</FONT c>

WONDER13.MOV -- Shakespeare’s Theater -- From Shakespeare's - Henry V

WONDER14.MOV -- Leonardo’s Workshop -- US3's - Cantaloop
Tim confirmed Leonardo's is inspired by cantaloop.
<FONT COLOR="blue">Good catch on the cantaloop!</FONT c>

WONDER15.MOV -- J.S Bach’s Cathedral -- Bach's
Fugue from Tocatta and Fugue in D minor

WONDER16.MOV -- Isaac Newton’s College -- Antonio Vivaldi's
Concerto No. 10 in B minor (RV 580)

WONDER17.MOV -- Adam Smith’s Trading Company -- Handel's
Arrival of the Queen of Sheba from Solomon

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER18.MOV -- Darwin’s Voyage - <FONT COLOR="purple"> Aaargh. You're going to keep me up
all night long trying to remember this one.</FONT c>

WONDER19.MOV -- Statue of Liberty -- John Philip Sousa's - EL Capitan

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER20.MOV -- The Eiffel Tower - <FONT COLOR="purple">I'm pretty sure this was just
some random accordion music.</FONT c>

WONDER21.MOV -- Women’s Suffrage - <FONT COLOR="purple"> Inspired by "Swing At The Daisy Chain"
by Count Basie & His Orchestra</FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER22.MOV -- Hoover Dam - <FONT COLOR="purple">This was actually inspired by a track on the
Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack. Those guys did an awesome job on their music.
And it's still one of the best opening animations I've ever seen.</FONT c>

WONDER23.MOV -- The Manhattan Project - <FONT COLOR="purple">This was inspired by a Morphine track,
either "Bo's Veranda" or "I Had My Chance" from the Get Shorty soundtrack.</FONT c>
<FONT COLOR="blue">The Morphine track for Manhattan Project was "I Had My Chance." At one point some
QA guys wanted us to switch the music for Manhattan Project and Hoover Dam because
they thought that MP needed "more dramatic music befitting the most destructive weapon
ever produced by mankind," or something like that. But, the MP movie was meant
to be on the dark side. Incidentally, the Morphine track has a lot of intense wailing sax
that couldn't be replicated with digital sounds, so a guitar sound was used instead.</FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER24.MOV -- United Nations - <FONT COLOR="purple">I'm pretty sure this was inspired by the
main title to Laputa. But I'm not 100% sure on that one.</FONT c>

WONDER25.MOV -- Apollo Program - <FONT COLOR="purple"> Inspired by the beginning of "Telegraph Road",
by Dire Straits. Random memory: we briefly thought about licensing the
80s song "Major Tom" by Peter Schilling for this clip. When put with that music,
the clip is much more celebratory and fun. This somber version is probably
more appropriate, but very different.</FONT c>
<FONT COLOR="blue"> As Tim points out, the music can really change the flavor of a movie.
From what I remember the Apollo Project wasn't even re-edited from the original
version {which did in fact use the "Earth below us" chorus from Major Tom}.
Yet, the feel is very different.</FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER26.MOV -- The Seti Program - <FONT COLOR="purple">I think this was another "inspired by
Mechwarrior 2" track.</FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="red">*</FONT c> WONDER27.MOV -- Cure for Cancer - <FONT COLOR="purple">I think this was inspired by another
Clannad track, but I wouldn't swear to it.</FONT c>
<FONT COLOR="blue"> I'm also pretty sure that the Cure for Cancer was Clannad. </FONT c>

<FONT COLOR="blue">Glad you like the wonder movies. This brought back some memories, especially
of the mechwarrior soundtrack and Tim's much-used copy of "Last of the Mohicans"!</FONT c>
